I wonder if this is how Legand and Anaconda got started...

I was out doing calls today and I had to go to Worth IL. It's a little town in the SW burbs of Chicago. So I figure I would hit the only coin shop in the area. I get there and the shop is closed, but I look up and notice the name...

M&R Coins and Live Bait!

That was about the funniest thing I have ever seen!!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Actually I looked in the window and there is a row of coins on one side and a tank of minnows on the other! I have to go there when they are open... Wonder if I can get away with something smells fishy around here! and it isn't Russ's date!!!

Well, I do know several coin collectors who like to fish.

I might not mind shopping for bait in a coin shop but I don't know that I'd want to shop for coins in a bait shop. image

    Marty,

I can't resist the joke a coin dealer selling live baite brings to mind.

Sure, it makes sense !!!, after all coin dealers and sellers of bait both deal in live suckers image

  • Since you mentioned it.....

I first started looking at coins at Rick Medina's coin shop (I forget the name but half the businesses there start with "Alamo", so i'll call it Alamo Rare Coins) on Fredricksburg road in San Antonio. It was around 1983 or 1984. I got into coins just as PCGS was starting up. It really was an exciting time.

I started by reading books about coin investment, discovered Q. David Bowers' writings, decided to study coins before i started spending all my money on them (i didn't have very much!), and then started picking out the nice Walkers and Mercs in the junk silver boxes and filling card board holders. That's how i started learning how to grade and making friends in the coin business. I then started buying quasi nice coins and putting them on consignment at Ricks and making a few bucks now and then. I soon started law school (I was workin on my MBA at the time) and dropped the coin stuff to focus on my studies. I picked coins up again towards the end of law school, but primariy just by reading more books about coins.

By the way, i like to fish so a bait/coin shop would work for me!!
