Here is the break down
a quarter weighs 6.25 grams, so 79.6 of them weighs a pound
a quarter contains 5.625 grams of silver, so it takes about 88.5 of them to make a pound of silver (apprx 1.1 pounds total weight of quarters)
for dimes, multiply the above numbers by 2.5
So if 79.6 quarters weighs a pound, then 79.6 times 2.5 = 199 dimes weight a pound
and if it takes 88.5 quarters to make a pound of silver then 88.5 times 2.5 = 221 dimes equals one pound of silver.
There are only 12 troy ounces in a troy pound, not 16.
LOL, it took me three posts to answer, but i hope it helped.
a quarter contains 5.625 grams of silver so 80.6 quarters makes one pound of silver. (total weight 1.1 pounds of quarters)
now in TROY
59.7 quarters weighs one troy pound
66.3 quarters makes one troy pound of silver.
the numbers still work for all types, and just need to be multiplied by
2.5 to work for dimes. so that
STANDARD
181.25 dimes weighs one standard pound
201.5 dimes makes up one pound of silver (1.1 pounds total weight)
TROY
149.25 dimes weighs one troy pound
165.75 dimes weighs one troy pound of silver (1.1 pounds total weight)
24 grains= 1Penny weight
20 penny weight = 1 troy Oz.
480 Grains = 1 troy Oz.
12 Troy Ozs.=1 troy pound
1 troy oz. = 31.104 grams
1penny weight = 1.552 grams
Frequently those selling pounds of silver are trying to rip people off since most believe
they are getting 16 Oz. Silver is rarely priced in pounds or other units anyway so there's
no need.
a sore spot on my noggin. To see it another way,
RELATIVE VALUE OF TROY AND AVOIRDUPOIS WEIGHTS.
Useful in determining the troy weight of silver by ordinary weights.
1 lb. troy = 0.822857 lb. av. = 13 oz. 72.5 grs.
1 lb. avoirdupois = 1.215277 lb. troy = 1 lb. 2 oz. 280 grs.
So, a troy oz is heavier than an av. oz, but a troy pound is light compared
to an av. pound.
