I was following that auction. I had a feeling from the start that it was going to top 100K.

Personally, I find it to be a rather unattractive design. Even if I were a multi-millionaire, I'd have to pass on it.

    We ARE watching you.

It's 1835? It looks like 1855 to me.

It is slightly unattractive, but I'm always happy when I hear that a Darkside coin reached six digits.

In my opinion it's not that ugly, and I like the reverse design, despite the bowl haircuts of the boys at the bottom. I bet it has nice proof-like surfaces and original toning.

  • It is actually from 1835, but is not a Ruble, but rather 1-1/2 Rubles.

I'm glad it is, because if I ever decide to do a set of Russian silver Rubles I don't have to worry about that one image

Btw, 109K is a lot image

  • Weren't such haircuts typical of mujiks in czarist Russia?

We have a saying here in Bulgaria for people who may accidentally have cut their hair in a similar fashion: "You've had your hair cut just like a mujik".image

Funny thing, these haircuts seem to be in fashion all the time . "Mujik" hein? You don't like Russians that much, do you Philip? image

  • No, it's not a matter of liking Russians or not. It's simply that we have this saying up here and I personally dislike similar haircuts image

Once again, I'd like to call attention to the fact that the coin is denominated in Roubles as well as Zloty, the Polish currency. Poland didn't exist at the time, as it had been partitioned 30 years previously, into 3 regions controlled by Prussia (Germany), Austria (Austro-Hungarian Empire) and Russia. The Zloty denomination suggests it was produced for the Russian controlled part of Poland, and not for Russia.

With that kind of money, I would buy Cooke's Una and have enough left to buy out practically every US dealer's worthwhile Victorian/Edward VII/George V coin in stock. I'm happy if the buyer is happy, but I am unimpressed with the coin - it rather reminds me of the "All Presidents" medal we all loved so much a while ago.

  • Yes, but still the coin is listed under Russia, as opposed to Poland. That's weird...

I like the double-denominated coppers from the 1770s that circulated in Moldavia & Wallachia (i.e. Romania)... I came accross one a couple of months ago and am still having nightmares for not buying it image
