Can anyone out there recommend a good reference book on non sports cards?

The Sport Americana Price Guide to Non- Sports Cards by Christopher Benjamin for vintage cards. It's been out of print for years, so the prices aren't accurate, but it's good for information though. Non-Sport Update Magazine covers mostly modern non-sports, but also has a price guide that covers older issues and is sold at many bookstores.

Beckett used to publish a monthly magazine for non-sport cards as well. If I remember right I did see a copy
up at the mall. I think it's just called Beckett Collectables. I used to buy it often a few years back, but have
mostly droped out the non sports cards.
