Coin World has a article on the "Waffled" Canceled coins that were on Ebay

A couple of sentences are

"with the coins given a corrugated appearance before shipping, Mint police no longer needed to guard the material during transportation and melting"

and

"No specific security measures are required for handling scrap metal"

I'm going to assume we will be seeing more of these "waffled" coins in the future.

As a bidder on the waffled Jefferson, I can assure you that the $250+ closing bid on it will bring others out of waiting. I believe that the auctions for the waffled nickel, dime, quarter and half were tests to see the marketability of them.

As they did so well, they'll be back!

  • I think we will see a lot of them showing up seeings the ones on ebay realized so much $$. Why they realized such a high amount is beyond me, they are not errors, just scrap metal. Very soon the market will probably be flooded with them and go for a dime a dozen. The mint after all does just consider them scrap metal.

I believe that these were test pieces, they could be the only none error Waffled pieces.
