Bust half experts - opinions please on this nicely toned 1809

I just bought this for my type set. Very nice coloring, but it has a few rim bumps on the reverse. Please give me your opinions as to its grade, originality and overall eye appeal. This is a "normal edge" 1809. I included two images of the reverse because of the lighting. Thanks!

I like it. Looks to have nice surfaces, and the rim bumps don't bother me much, at all. Nice coin.

Here's one more shot of the edge. The bumps don't cover the entire edge. Apologies to the dial-up folks for all of the images!

Love the originality of it but to me the rim bumps are distracting.

My personal rule is that rim bumps are ok as long as they do not intrude into the denticles...

Hi Casey. I like the look of this one. Looks like some nice original dirt. I just checked my Overton book real quick... and I didn't see anything describing what's going on with the reverse rim as far as it being normal die characteristics. Not to say it's not there.. but at quick glance I didn't see anything. If this were a Morgan, it wouldn't have much eye-appeal. But it's NOT a Morgan, it's an original looking Bust half with nice eye-appeal. These coins can be interesting and fun to acquire even with any minor problems.

    Casey,

The coin has a nice overall strike - stars, drapery lines, and wings are well struck which is not the case on many early year busties. Type coins look better with good strikes. Original, even toning, VF35 details. Surfaces look good, rim bumps should be OK in an album or raw type set.

    Hi Casey,

I think this is a nice-looking coin. Bust coins are hard to find in (eye-appealing) original state, and this one looks to me like it qualifies as such. The rim bumps aren't too big a deal for me, either, as I would maybe put the coin in an album--color and overall "look" are bigger issues. I would grade this about VF 30.image

Not bad for an 09.....early strike Bust Halves were not very strong strikes (keep in mind screw press) but this one has a very good strike. The rim bumps are no big deal.

Detail on stars 8-13 is very good....not bad on 1-7 either and still lots of drapery detail around the bust.

On the reverse the talons still have good detail and the wing tips and head also.

This coin should grade EF-40 and maybe 45.If I had better picks I could try and tell the overton variety as 1809 had about 8-R5 and about
6-R4's for that year. Nice coin......but keep in mind the rim bumps would lower the grade some.

It'd be nice if the rim dings didn't aggrevate me as much as finerprints do. What a shame but once you put it in a Dansco nobody'll ever know.
