Looking for some advice regarding Kennedy Half Dollars

A few months ago I was in my bank and asked if they had any rolls of half dollars. They had a few, but two rolls were yellow rolls from the mint and I took those. They were what appeared to be 1998 Kennedy Half Dollars, Uncirculated. I took them home and unwrapped them (Probably my first mistake) and carefully put them in plastic tubes. They are indeed, uncirculated Kennedy's, but I did not look at each to see if they are P's or D's or Both.

My question is: Should I send them in to be graded or are they too modern to worry about. The cost doesn't bother me and in some respects I think I would like to have them protected by the plastic holders. This was before the U.S. Mint was selling collectors rolls only, so I only have the face value in them. Suggestions?

There are no MS69 1998's in the PCGS population, and I have no illusions that I have one or two, but, that would be nice.

First, put them in 2x2 holders. After that, inspect every coin closely and seperated (With a 10x magnifier is the best) and see how much marks it has. I would advice to send the best 5 in.

    Dan,

It really depends on the reason for submitting them. Fact is, unless they grade very very high, they wouldn't be worth the submission fee. So, if the purpose is profit potential, you'll need to be very selective about what you send.

If the reason is because you like the coins for your own collection and would prefer to have them slabbed, then why not? A lot of people would say that's stupid, but I say screw them, it's your money and your collection.

  • I agree with Dennis, send in the best five or so. If nothing else, it will give you some education in the series. I was going to suggest selling the coins individually on eBay, but after looking at insertion fees and dealing with shipping, it probably wouldn't be worth your time unless you are really bored.

As far as graded coins go, MS66 on eBay go for about $8-10, MS67 about $40. If they are really nice, I say go for it.

  • Thanks for your help. I'm a lousy grader but will attempt to send in the best 5 and see how it goes. I will keep you informed. Thanks a lot!

  • Dan - my experience with these types of rolls is that the best ones yield MS65 and below coins - occasionally a rare MS66. If you're looking for late date gems I would go with mint sets.
  • Fc57,

Thanks. I would bet you are correct. I thought it unusal in 2003 to find two rolls of new 1998's. I have not scrutinized all of the coins, but may look at them tonight.

There has been a back log of these at the fed since late 2000. There is normally a three year
turnover so it should be possible to find rolls back to 1997 and an occasional '96 wouldn't be
very surprising. Older rolls would have been deposited by individuals.

The likelyhood of finding a gem in just two rolls is extremely poor. Gems must be well struck and
    mostly without marking.
