Pilsudski Crown - Rifle Corps Obverse

I just won this piece on eBay. It's a difficult-to-find Polish crown of 1934, with the Obverse commemorating the polish Rifle Corps. It appears to be in XF, with some slightly weird green toning, but I'll have to wait and see what it looks like when it arrives. Also, it's a one year type coin, mintage = 300,000.

Obverse (the obverse of Polish coins is defined as the side with the eagle on it):

This is what the typical crowns minted from 1934 to 1939 look like. There are also some key dates in this series. The 1934, with a mintage of of only 200,000, and the 1938, with a mintage of 234,000.

I'm not parsing you, trozau. Sorry.

These are admittedly not the most attractive coins in the world, but they played an important role in the period of Polish history known as the Second Republic, ie., from the armistice of 1919 to the invasion of the Nazis in 1939.

Actually, the portrait of Pilsudski sort of reminds me of the Churchill Crown. image

That's a nice piece, NJMark1. It's probably nicer than the one I just bought, but I've been looking for one of these for a while now, and it's the first one I've come across. I'm also looking for one of the 10 zlotych pieces, OB 022.

  • Bought it as a misidentified coin. The dealer thought it was the regular 5Z KM28

Most of these Polish silver coins are dang near impossible to find in uncirculated condition; they were the workhorses of the newly free Polish country. The 1937 10 zlotych piece also commands high prices.

  • I've seen only one of the 10 zlotych pieces with the Rifle Corps obverse in person. It was at a coin and stamp shop in a small touristic town in Southern Poland. It was overpriced and very worn, so I didn't buy it.

    Nice coin, Trozau!!!

Funny, but: "This one was "slander-slabbed" by NGC as MS62."

I just located and bought a 10 zloty Rifle Corps piece in XF/AU but it's hairlined. Cost was less than $25, which I consider a good price.

I just received the one I bought, and it's much nicer than the pic. An easy AU with some nice luster - not green at all. Looks every bit as nice as Mark's. Not too bad for $30.

I was about to ask if that had a fineness of .500, as JohnZ's coin appears to have that color to it.

    I see from the 2 X 2 in NJMark's picture that it is .75-something, though. (.752? .757?)

Neat coins, both. NJMark's looks especially nice. Glad to hear yours is as nice, in person.

SSP: a sneak preview of the one Polish coin that will be in my next batch of eBay auctions, hopefully Thursday or Friday:

Sorry I had to clean it, but it's still a nice little piece, as you can see.

PS- I figger I have maybe ten cents in it; it was by far the oldest coin in the bulk lot I got it from. Not a bad cherrypick, eh? image
