Question about 1/12 Ecu

This question has been bugging me for the last month after I got my 17th century Krause for Christmas.

My sole posession is a French 1/12 Ecu with Louis XIV on it... fairly worn (I think a solid fine) and quite unimpressive, date and mintmark being 1649 B.

So, when I opened my new catalog, I saw that the price listed was as follows: -,-,-,-.

Does this indicate lack of information or is it the case I have something more interesting (impressive image)? Also, is there a difference between listing prices in that way and listing a coin as rare?

Unfortunately, no. If it really is extremely rare, though, they will sometimes not that fact instead of listing the "nulls."

So they have no idea what the value is?

Probably not. As you go back through the volumes on ever earlier centuries, you will find null entries increasingly common. The more thinly collected coins are, the less data there is for them to build a price database on. Not too infrequently, you'll also come across the "fill-in" syndrome, as I call it. This is where they have price profiles for a number of dates of a certain type of coin and then "fill in" the same profile across all the rest, whether they have the data or not.

    Here's a 1/12 ecu from 1643. Look familiar?
