Weighted GPA vs. Set Rating?

I was admiring different sets from 1968 Topps Baseball Registry. The second finest set has a Weighted GPA of 9.01; is 100% complete; and has a set rating of 8.93. Why the difference if the set is complete? Are there "bonus points" other than the weighted average of various cards? Thanks. Matt

  • [Grade] X [Grade Weight] = [Grade Points] for a card.

Add all the grade points for the cards in the set and divide by number of cards in the set. That is the set rating; which is very different than the average grade. It all depends on the weight of each card.

    I hope that's clear.
There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"
  • When a set has variations (such as the 68 set) and is not broken down between master and basic sets (like the 69 set), a higher weight is given to the less common variation so the total GPA can exceed the set rating. When a year is broken down between master and basic, the GPA of the 100% complete basic set will always equal the set rating.
  • Just use my Set Registry Spreadsheets.

They do the calculations for you.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to email me and I'll explain any irregularities such as this set.

Here is a link to a previous thread that discusses how to calculate GPA and Set Rating.

    Hope that helps.
