Newbie with Grampa's collection

I got my grandfather's coin collection and have really enjoyed going through all the US coins, but now I'm looking at some of the foreign stuff. Sooooo, here's where i could use some help.

Most of the coins are from the late 50s through the early 70s. I haven't really gone through them, except to determine the country. Here is a listing of the countries:

Italy
Germany
Ireland
France
Netherlands
Spain
Chile
Peru
Trinidad and Tobago
Colombia
Argentina
Nicaragua
Canada
Brasil
Mexico

My question, then, is just from looking at this list, is there anything I should be looking for, like any really good coins from any of those countries during that time period? Basically, is it worth my time to worry about these? or should I just concentrate on the US collection.

If you're interested, you can see the list of US coins I have here:

thanks for the help!

  • I guess the first thing I would do with that group of foreign coins, is pick out the ones that appear to be silver-- those have the best chance of having some value. Also, any coins from say, the 50's and 60's that look mint state, there's a good chance you'll have interested buyers for those. From that period though, with world coins, chances are there wouldn't be anything of REAL high value (like $50 or over). But the very best thing to do is see if your local library has a copy of a 20th Century Krause Catalogue of World Coins. There, you can at least get a general gauge of values.
  • I agree about trying the library for the copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins.
Organize, and write down info, by Country, Denomination and Date for starters so you can take the list to the library or send it or post it online for further help. If you have a way to get pictures then they may prove to be a big help on the tougher ones.
