Some VERY interesting finds today in the coin show "junk" bin, and a KM#, etc question!

I went to this month's show with the hope that I could fill a few holes in my Maritimes, Mexican, Canadian folders, but ended up instead picking up a few older coins which I had not seen before at 50 cents apiece:

Austria KM #2185 1 Kreuzer (1851 "A")

German States (Prussia) KM #412 4 Pfenninge (1823 "D")

Australia KM #24 silver 3 pence (1918M)

Province du Bas Canada #LC-8C1 1/2-penny Token (Un Sou) "Banque du Peuple" (1837 "in-line")

Somalia KM#?? FAO issue 10 shillings (camel) (2000) ***

and one I'd NEVER seen before, and an interesting addition (with a griffon on the obverse).....

..... Ionian Islands KM # 31 2 Lepta (1819 or 1820) - - a new addition to my "1-per-country" set!

Question: Can anyone tell me... is "Republic of Somalia" from 2002 considered a separate "phase" from the "Somali Democratic Republic" listed as 1970-?? ? Thanks!

At this point, it's getting harder and harder for me to find the items still on my "needs" lists (U.S., Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, & 1-per-country), so now I amuse myself looking for "obscure" countries/coins/designs/rulers when I get the chance & the pocket money!image

  • Nice Ionian find!
Yes, Somalia is still Somalia, despite the official government lingo change.

Thanks, all! Granted, when dealing with "junk box" finds, they're not the highest quality.... but I really just like finding new and interesting things from an aesthetic or historical aspect!

As far as the Somali coin goes, since the kids and I expanded our "1-per-country" set to a "1-per-phase-per-country" collection, I was hoping I could add 1 to my count with the Somali Republic coin. Right now, my list for that country is as follows - - any corrections/additions to it?:

    SOMALIA:

    (1) SOMALIA (??-1950-??)
    (2) SOMALI REPUBLIC (1965-1970)
    (3) SOMALI DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC (1970+)
    (4) SOMALI REPUBLIC (??-2000-??)

Somalia hasn't had a central government since 1991, when Mohamed Siad Barre was ousted (he was leader of the Somali Democratic Republic). There is a self-described "transitional government" in Mogadishu which issues coins for Somalia, but it really only controls part of the capital and little else and doesn't have international recognition.

There's also a breakaway region in the north which calls itself Somaliland and issues coins in that name.

    Hope that helps. image

My favorite ones from Somalia are from 1950 - - the 1 Somalo & 10 centessimi (#1 & #3), both with elephant heads on them!

My 1-and-only Somaliland is a really interesting large one ($5 2000) with a dragon on one side & an eagle, scales, & shaking hands on the other. Very cool! Anyone have a KM# for it?
