  • Larry,

Nice coins. I'm liquidating my Saints, so I'll probably have to pick up a couple.

    Larry,

I am sorry to see you breaking up that magnificent set. What were your favorite few coins? - I am putting together a Type III set.

  • This will always be one of my favorite series. When I first started out I was going to try for nothing but "S" mint coins but one date led to another. There were a few that I thought were more special but eventually it got to the point where they were each just as interesting as another. I was only going to do the type 3's but then I got hooked on the type 2's. You could spend a life time on any one of the types and never get bored. The history is so rich with each coin. It was a difficult decision to sell them. I wanted to keep a few key dates but for over a year now I struggled to decide and could never make up my mind. This is as clean of a break as I could come up with.

There are also a couple dozen more $20 Lib's from the set that will be in the Portland Signature Sale. Some Carson City and a few of the more interesting dates. The 1850 AU50 is from the Bass collection and the 1863-S in XF45 is Brother Jonathan coin.

I was probably foolish to have had all my NGC slabs crossed to PCGS. I lost a lot of grade points just getting them into PCGS slabs. They probably accounted for a third of the set. I slabed about a third myself and then purchased the rest already in PCGS slabs.

I am still having second thoughts but the wheels are in motion now. By no means am out of the gold coins. Im just looking to down size and start picking up more of a variety of old gold rather than complete a series. I still have the modern Eagles that I can do that with.

If there was coin in the set that I would call my favorite I would have to say it was a toss up between the 1884-CC in AU55 and the 1906-D in MS61.

The 1878 (P) MS60 is an interesting unlisted variety with a double die on the reverse and a recut date.

    Dabig,

KInda weird comment on the afterthought of crossing to PCGS. Unless I have my head inthe sand you have done and will do much better having those pieces in PCGS slabs over NGC. Whatever the points you "coulda had" would have been adjusted lower to realistic levels regardless. You should have no remorse my friend. Super key coins in NGC slabs may fare better but by and large you did fine IMHO.

    Good luck

    Marc
