mac or pc?

So the inevitable question comes, as a coin collector do you use mac or pc? and also what software is out there for both to track your coin collection?

I was a Mac guy for over 10 years but finally switched over 4 years ago at home. I've used PCs in the workplace though for much longer. Switching wasn't too hard when I realized where my mortgage and coin money came from.

For coin software, I'm not aware of any that are cross platform. Excel spreadsheets would be the closest.
  • I work with both Macs & PCs and there used to be a huge difference in quality for any graphics. Now I think it is just a matter of preference. Macs are more user friendly, but PCs are more flexible. I don't have enough experience with collecting software to make an informed decision, but I use Heritage's freebie software, because, well, its free.

Mac? They still make those? I thought Web TV killed them off. image

  • I use both, I am here on a PC with a Mac next to it is printing out an invoice.

  • I use both Mac and PC. I use a PC over at my mother's house and a Mac at my father's house. I like using the Mac better then the PC though. Macs are really user friendly. The only problem with Macs is that in most cases you can not just go to the store and buy any ordinary software like you can with a PC. You can get Virtual PC though which makes the Macs able to run PC software titles. I do not have the software to do this but will probably be getting it sometime.image
  • The fact that there hasnt been a virus to hit the mac in 20 years makes me use a mac

Then you'll find this amusing. Microsoft bought out connectix and VirtualPC is now a Microsoft product. Microsoft VirtualPC 2004 was recently released. MS uses it for the same reason I use it at work. Easy way to create disposable test environments for testing software without setting up a lot of hardware.

  • I don't personally use a mac but my business has one for graphics. If you need high quality graphics then there is no beating the Mac. I consider it a high end tool and not a substitute. However for my everyday computing needs it's the PC for price, flexibility and program availability.

I can think of a dozen reasons not to have high capacity magazines, but it's the reasons I haven't thought about that I need them.
  • What do you mean a Mac doesn't run long enough to get online. I use my Mac without any problems, excuse you. You should not be cutting other people's choices of computers down. We all have choices of what we want to use and if we want to use Macs that is our choice and you should not think less of people that use a computer that is not like yours. Just my opinion. I do not think less of any of you because you use PCs therefore you should not think less of use because we choose to use Macs. image

I used a Mac from 1984 until 1999 when I decided I needed some obscure software...

The Mac OS blows the PC Windoze away but what can you do? You need software to use and that is the bottom line.

As to coin software: I use MS Access and am in the process of designing a neat little user interface around me database. Access is available on the Mac too I would think...

You'd be touchy too if you were using a machine produced by a company that frequently has one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. image

Access isn't on the Mac. That's one of the big complaints Mac users had for years against MS. The funny thing is that back in late 1984 Gates made a proposition to Jobs. That Apple should license the MacOS to Microsoft exclusively because Apple was better at designing things than selling them and Microsoft would retool to develop mostly for the Mac. Funny thing is, if they would have done that we'd all be using Macs now.

  • OK Tbird, what happened to you? Just tell us don't ask us to download a file into our computers.
  • I'm a recent Mac convert. I've used previous versions of the MacOS and hated it but OSX is fantastic. I use it on my PowerbookG4 which has been reliable through the year of heavy use I've put it through from one end of the globe to another.

I've had experience making graphics on both Macs and PCs and I like using the Mac better because their displays are amazing and I find the structure of their hotkey arrangement more accessible and easier to use which makes my productivity faster. Apple's ColorSynch is superior as well and what I make on-screen is precicely what I print out, this hasn't been the case in my experience with PC's. Macs also come with a bunch of useful software like iTunes and iPhoto which I use daily.

People have been saying Apple's on the verge of going out of business for 20 years. It hasn't happened and now it looks like Apple is doing better than ever; the amazing success of the iPod has brought about large profits for Apple in today's volatile tech market, Apple has also teamed up with HP to bring out an HP branded iPod... it seems Apple isn't going to make the same mistake twice.

And finally; I hate one-button mice too, but I can use a two button one with OS X just fine.

AND in addition I'd like to ad that a computer is ultimately a tool, what you do with that tool is what's really important and I think my work speaks for itself.

  • Well, Microsoft made the first Software for the Apple II and Macintosh, it's how they got their start. Apple's debts to Microsoft have been paid off and later this month Apple will finally be debt-free thanks to their more recent success.

I use PC's at work and a Mac at home. They each have their good and bad points, but overall I'd take my Mac if I had to choose.

I have only PCs but my friend is working on converting me.

Now that they have a real OS (Unix) image I'm thinking about an Imac.
Then my Ipod would be back in its native environment.

  • Rumours are floating around the net of a 20th anniversary iMac that'll have a 2.0GHz G5 processor, 20" screen etc. The building materials for the iMac are being changed so they're lest costly too so if such a machine IS announces either Monday or Tuesday then it may also be reasonably affordable.

The MAC is great for graphics….always has been. Companies such as advertising agencies as an example live by them because they were 64 bit. Now Microsoft also has 64 bit support so more people have moved away and over to a Windows OS

  • Sun Fire server with a bunch of thin clients around the house. Solaris 9 OS.
  • Mac at home (imac) and for my laptop (ibook). I use a PC at work.

I have a preference for the Mac and it's OS. Have always been more comfortable with the system and it's lack of needs to keep running. As an OS, I feel that Windows is a seriously flawed piece of software, that needs far more care and user attention then any OS should. I have a computer Science degree from a major university, and damned if I can always find out whats buggered the machine at work when it goes down (which is about once a month like clockwork). I've never been unable to get my Mac's back up in less then half an hour, and my crashes in the last two years can be counted on one hand with several fingers to spare. The laptop has yet to ever crash.

So yah, I'm a Mac supporter. Not a rabid one, as I feel that in the end it's just a tool. I like this one, and it does the job. Others like PC's and they do the job for them. No skin off my nose what others use or like. Certainly not worth arguing about.

And why are Mac users so touchy?

Imagine that you like... oh say... modern US coinage, you know, those clad coins. And everyone is constantly telling you it's crap, and junk, and valuless, and why oh why do you like it when there are so many 'superior' 'real' American coins out there? (Note, the previous does not reflect my opinion about such coins) It would get tired after a decade or so to hear such everytime you turn about when the subject comes up. One would naturally get defensive and a touch cranky on the topic.

  • macs just blow. I use a pc for all types of graphics and can't imagine what a mac would be able to do to be "vastly superior" - that's just a bs soundbit mac users spit out.

You can build a pc to do just about anything, in any configuration you like. And you can buy software to do just about anything as well. My home office has three networked pcs, six monitors, four printers, a scanner, card readers, television cards, dvd and cd drives and burners and everything works flawlessly. I shut the power off a couple of times a week just to give everything a rest. If anything goes wrong it will be up and running in no time with readily available componentry.
"I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my Grandfather did, as opposed to screaming in terror like his passengers."
  • Well, I don't see how that makes Macs 'blow'.

My year and a half old Powerbook is only 667mhz but it handles things like 300 meg images (11"x17" @ 300dpi) with around 50 layers with layer masks, vector masks , layer styles etc quite well. It crunches the math on 20+ meg illustrator vector files quite well too. All on a beautiful display with no crashing at all. So if that makes it blow, then fine.
  • try getting anything but the most popular software for a mac.

if there is any money left after paying the premium you pay for a mac as compared to a pc.
"I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my Grandfather did, as opposed to screaming in terror like his passengers."
  • Please, it's 2004. If you can't find software somewhere you can order, purchase and/or download it online.
  • you win, mac's are the cats pajamas
"I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my Grandfather did, as opposed to screaming in terror like his passengers."
  • which is why pc users outnumber mac users by 20 to 1, because the 95% who use pcs have no idea what they're doing.
"I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my Grandfather did, as opposed to screaming in terror like his passengers."
  • I haven't really been harshly criticizing PCs, I don't ever really regret using one. I certainly wouldn't go as far as to say that PCs suck or blow or whatever.
I just prefer something else now that certainly doesn't suck (although OS 9 and below certainly did).

Have a G5 and love it, no virus worry, ultra fast, and just cool. PC's are fine if you are running Red Hat or Slackware or some other Distro. Windows just has too many holes in it.

I've used both extensively -- until IS at work made us give up our PowerMacs. Frankly, I still miss it. It was so much easier to use and troubleshoot, far superior graphics capability, flexible and just all-around user-friendly. However, when I bought a computer for home, I went with a PC. Why? Because I could see which way the wind was blowing ... that is, the software choices. Ever since Apple shot itself in the foot business-wise, it was clear that they would not be able to hold onto software apps vendors. Increasingly, apps were being written first for the PC and then modified for the Mac (and with decreasing quality control), and eventually fewer and fewer bothered making the effort to produce anything for the Mac. I still miss my Mac ... everyday ... when I have to deal with the daily ration of MS/OS-induced frustration. (For instance, right now I can't print on my printer because the paper stops after printing an inch. Moreover, whenever I post a response to a PM here, there's a 5-10% that it'll crash.imageimage

I use Frontpage for my collection. It's under construction and I probably won't ever put it online, but I like it.
I have a list of denominations, click one that brings you to each "era" pick one, that brings you to that coin "Liberty Nickel" or whatever with a list off all the years and a little brief history of the coin. Pick the year and I have what I'd grade it at, what I paid for it, mintage, and the big 900x900pixel pictures. It's a bit of work, but I think it looks neat. I have my Morgans finished, but ofcourse I only have 7 of them for now. Seeing that I just started collecting them less than a month ago.

No. The reason why PCs sell better than the Mac is due to price pure and simple. And cheaper doesn't mean better.
