Nickel coins: toning and dipping

Greetings, All -

I was wondering if nickel coins tone as quickly as silver coins. Do any of you know? Do nickel coins tone in a similar manner as silver coins as far as appearance is concerned? Are there as many "rainbow toned" nickels as there are Morgan Dollars?

Also, do nickel coins dip as well as silver coins? Is the same type of dipping solution used on nickel as on silver?

Thanks,

Dan

Silver is much more reactive than nickel, and the storage of morgans, too, made their toning become so drastic--nickels will be found much less with real rainbows.

That said, old albums can tone them up real nice... why I bought a complete 1938-1961 BU set that's all matching/original... here are some examples image

I have several very nicely toned nickels. Non war nickels don't tone like silver. In the ones I have seen, they have been electric blue, bright yellow, and the occassional red. I rarely see a rainbow orientation unless it's been played with. The apalachian hoard war nickels are the most spectacular ones. I have one a generous board member sent me. It's one I won't let go of. Electric blue and yellow and absolutely intense and brilliant. I've also seen deep reds and blues on those. I also have several irridescent toned war nickels with a sequence of irridescent red and yellow with a little blue. My toned nickels are among my favorite coins.

    Generally not.

Definitely not, but I suppose it depends on what you're using.

I have done so (with Jeweluster), but the results on nickel have not been as good.

When I say "nickel" in this context, I am referring to the copper-nickel used in our U.S. coins. Even for the "nickel" (5-cent) coin actually has more copper in it than it does nickel.

The toning is from the copper alloyed with the nickel.
