  • Can you tell us the sizes? They appear to be farthings to me.

The first one is British, from the reign of George II.

The second is Irish from the reign of James II.

Someone with Krause can give you their approximate ages.

    Thank you for responding Darkhorse.

Each is slightly larger than a quarter.
  • The first one (British) is a halfpenny. Date could be anywhere from 1729-1754. I'm still studying it.

  • On the British halfpenny, I'm going with the first obv. (using the hair ribbon) that narrows it down to 1729-1739. image

Someone with a 1600"s Krause will need to look up the Ireland issue.

    I'm guessing the Irish 1/2d is 1686

Interesting coins, Tassa. Are they metal detector finds?

  • The top one is virtually valueless since there are no real rare dates and 'fine' examples with a clear date are abundant. But you could get a few bucks on Ebay for the Irish thing... James II always attracts for some reason ....

Just as a little FYI Tassa, George II ruled from 1727-1760 and James II ruled from 1685-1688.

The second one is a regular issue Irish Halfpenny (S-6576), as opposed to the later (1689-90) "Gunmoney" issue.

  • I really like James II coins-- maybe it's 'cause I like the period, maybe 'cause he reigned so briefly. A lot
    of history in those coins!
