Storing PSA cards

Just got two of the new M J Roops boxes for my PSA cards. They're quite sturdy and they hold 176 PSA cards. $60 is kind of pricey, but I like them. image

FRANK - I just ordered 1 for my son's collection. He has a nice growing vintage collection, so i thought it would be a nice gift for him.
You mentioned it holds 176 PSA's. The Roop ad states 172, I would be very happy if it were 176, since a hockey set that I',m working on, has 176 cards in it. Did you verify this #, or was it a typo...jay

Hi Jay...there are four sections in the box and I have 44 cards in each section. 4 x 44 = 176!image

    frank,
if you didn't have 44 cards in a row is there a thing (lack of a better word) that stops them from falling over?

    Did you have it personalized?

I was wondering how it would show up (I used my name as an example):

    Example 1 (2 lines):

    The John
    Basilone Collection

    Example 2 (1 Line):

    The John Basilone Collection

    Any help would be appreciated..
  • Jackstraw,

I picked up foam padding at a local arts and craft store. The width is good and I trim the length with an electric knife. It's firm enough to keep the cards upright and soft enough to make sure it does not damage the cards in penny sleeves. The foam should be readily available and work in any type of box.

Jackstraw...it came with one plastic "stand" which you can use to hold up unfilled rows. If you need more of these they will sell them to you.

John..I didn't have them personalized since I wasn't sure which of my sets I would be using them for. Customization is free, I'm told.

Frank - Thanks for the good news of 176 cards. I'll have to check my sons box out and probably order another 1 or 2 for specific sets I'm working on. I had it personilized in Gold lettering w/ my kids name, he'll think its cooler that it was designated for him as opposed to a blank box off the shelf. The custom lettering was free, so I'll let you all know how it turns out. I should have it within a week or so...jay
  • Those MJ Roops boxes are beautiful! And only 20 dollars more than the modern Black and Cherry boxes sold regularly on e-bay.

I think I am gonna get one for my 1971 Topps GAI/PSA hockey set. The GAI holders are slightly thicker so I won't get the full capacity, probably around 140 cards is my estimate but it should still hold my set.

One seventy-six, ya say. I'm not sure if I want to drop $60 on storage, but that four-card difference makes it so much more enticing. The three sets I'm working on just happen to total 176 cards: 36, 40 (one of which is an insane short print that I may never own) and 100.

YAWIE - $60 did sound steep to me too!
But I figured, my '72 Hockey set that has 176 cards in it will fit perfectly, and on the scheme of things 1 of my PSA-9's of say Dryden or Lafleur are worth that much. Even if you put in 176 cards that are worth just $10 or $12 each, thats $2000.00 right there...jay

Jay you bring up a good point....if you spend $2-3k each for a couple of 66 card early 60's Parkhurst or Topps Sets....then $60.00 to keep them in a nice box is a drop in the bucket.

Good point. The non-descript cardboard vault boxes they're now in don't really seem to do the cards justice. I'd really like to have my brother-in-law make me some nice wooden cases custom fit to each set, but I doubt that'll happen any time soon. May just have to pick up one of these MJ Roop boxes, though a part of me will be saying, "That's $60 less for cards!"

  • Would someone post a link to what these boxes look like? I can't seem to find anything.

    Thank you image

    here is the link: MJROOP
  • Thanks Basilone! Impressive products.
  • not to add to the confusion re: these boxes but could someone help me understand how they know what checklists to put in each box? I see how the binder system works as per their websute you order a binder system by year but the boxes are generic in terms of how one orders. I gues they could figure ity out if I custom label but do not want to chance it. I am considering purchasing for my 67T set which is 609 cards so therefore I would need 4 boxes
