Card shops in NYC?

I"m going to be in New York City next month for business, and there is only so long one can go without a fix. Does anyone know if there are any decent shops in Manhattan? My work schedule probably won't leave any time for any outside of the city. Any leads are greatly appreciated.

    Anthony,

I don't get over to the city much for cards, but the first name to pop in mind is Larry Fritsh. You might want to find where his place is in relation to where you'll be.

  • I'm there on a regular basis and have never found anything worthwhile. There is a place on 34th street near Penn Station (can't remember the name), but unless you are into strictly modern stuff it's not for you.

A neat place to visit however is "gottahaveit!", which is on 57th and Lex near the Hammacher Schlemmer store (north side of 57th). Pete's shop is a little small (and a little pricey), but he has some very neat stuff - including sports stuff - and is certainly worth a look. I have bought several things from him over the years, including a recently expired American Express card that belonged to Pete Rose (yes, it is signed on the back).

I thought Larry Fritsch was located in Wisconsin. I knew he a operated a Card Museum that went belly-up in Cooperstown in the early 90's, but didn't think he had a shop in NYC as well.
Successful dealings with Wcsportscards94558, EagleEyeKid, SamsGirl214, Volver, DwayneDrain, Oaksey25, Griffins, Cardfan07, Etc.

When I lived in Jersey and checked the sports card places in NYC they seemed to be much pricer then what I was used to, then add that NYC sales tax, which is about 9%, made few bargains available. GRIFFINS - I would look for a card show in the boroughs or Jersey and if you are going to be around in early March see if you can make it to Ft Washington...jay
  • I wonder if Brigandi coins is still around. Remember those goofballs?
    They were out of Brooklyn.
I think they graded their mint cards at arms length......"ahhh what they hey... the whole set looks mint!"
They did have almost every years sets from the 50's thru late 60's though.
Probably not unlike alot of dealers that had to accomodate their standards a bit when PSA first came around.
"You mean our EXMT cards aren't mint? I've never seen a better one, so it's mint to me!"
  • Jay - You were close! The current combined state/city sales tax rate in NYC is 8.625%. I would pass along a tip I learned a long time ago is that whenever possible, have items bought in NYC - especially small and lightweight stuff like cards, etc... - shipped home! That way you can avoid the sales tax. Most merchants of high-end stuff do this routinely. When I worked in the city in the early and mid 1980's it was standard practice for those of who lived in the city to have suits we bought in town to our friends in Jersey in order to avoid the sales tax. I'm sure stuff like that still goes on.

M'DOC - Its cost efficient to have it shipped, but it defeats the purpose of GRIFFINS request to get his fix while travelling east.
If he can't have the immediate gratification of having his purchase in his hands, then PC is correct, buy from eBay as that will get
    shipped too! ...jay

  • The shop near Penn Station is called "It's Another Hit". Lots of modern, inserts, some vintage and oddball sets. It's worth checking out if you are nearby.

I haven't been to NYC in 10 years, so my opinion might be way out of date, but I used to have a good time stopping by It's Another Hit on 33rd street. Here are some more shops.

    Anthony,

There is nothing you would be interested in.

On the other hand, if you wanted to go to the suburbs a certain collector may have 20,000 psa cards for you to see and maybe even do a deal or two with you.

    Guys-
thanks for all the responses, sounds like slim pickings. Have a feeling the card shop is an endangered species, at least in high rent areas like Manhattan.
Guess I'll just have to be content with looting Vic's house!

    Jim-
I'll email you off list later.

  • Didn't Brigandi have a shop in Manhattan?

In the pre PSA days, they use to heavily advertise their "super high grade" cards from the 1950's and 60's. I never bought from them, but I wonder how Mint those cards were in the eyes of PSA.

    Ironman,

You may be right - I have never been to a card shop in the city - thought that I remembered that Larry was there at one time.

I usually only go to the city to eat and drink.... And when I drink - I DEFINITELY don't to do cards.

Anthony - you should look to go the 30 minutes outside the city and check out Dav's collection. You can see the box of cards... and check out the binder....image But, really... when Tom, Jeff and I went - Jim could have charged admission and we wouldn't have complained!!!
