New arrival - Canadian Set

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,409 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just got home from school and waiting for me was an original 1946 Canadian Specimen Set with case. Each of the coins is toned blue/green and have similar type toning. This is by far the rarest set I've ever owned. Will post photo later.

Some quick shots. The coins are finger printed. A little distracting but original. imageimage

The best thing going for this set IMO is its originality. Just by looking at the set you can tell it wasn't a 'put together' set. All the coins are toned the same color with the same pattern. These original sets are a lot nicer than the helter skelter ones.

A mintage of 15 does not hurt either.

  • Beautiful set. I'm jealous. The matching toning looks great.

A mintage of 15 does not hurt either.

Not to take away from the purchase, but the mintage of these coins is over 15. I'd guess at somewhere between 30 and 40 sets, given the number of specimen 5 cent pieces I've seen over the years. I'm quite sure that the mint didn't sell specimen singles in 1946.

Paul, I agree the mintage is probably over 15. Cosmic was quoting Krause. I would aslo put the mintage in the 30-40 range.

Terry, Kelly is getting used to it.

Majorly groovy set! I like the fact that it's in the original case. Since specimen sets like that were usually presentation coins (not the kind sold to collectors), I wonder who the original recipient was.

I figured it was a Krause quote, just trying to keep facts straight. The actual mintage is sort of irrelevant - when it comes right down to it, early Canadian specimen coins are great coins in great demand. And a complete set, looking like that??? Wow.

    I like it!

I think the prints add character.

I agree. I've seen/owned many coins that have prints that don't bother me a bit.

Took my breath away-I thought they were a legend or something... will you add it to your collection or make it available to the marketplace?
