Which would you prefer an MS63FB or an MS65?

I was just wondering what everyone else thinks in regards to which is perferable in Mercury Dimes. Lets use a date of 1920. Not worring about money, just what is preferable. If the dimes were put into a registry set they would have the same points 63+2=65, or 60+0=65. Both coins are attractive, problem free. The only difference is the grade. Which carries more wieght the band or the higher grade?

Opinions please!

From the limited number of Mercs seen the 65 coin would be the choice. Good to excellent luster is present on a 65 where in some cases subdued luster is on 63 coins. Flash equals a classy coin.

45-P? Probably a 65 with "almost" FB.

I'd take the 67 (I have a 68*) a 61 is a pig -- who cares about bands, it is an artificial distinction....

Its on a case by case basis. The aesthetics of the coins, the date/mm, overall scarcity, etc,etc.

65 easy... though, actually, for later dates I prefer 66 or 67... but in FBs I tend towards 64s, not quite as nice as a 65, but not as bad as a 63... Most of the mercs I've bought, have either been 64FB or 66...

That's an easy one, even for someone who doesn't collect those pretty little things -- MS65!

The MS-63FB 1945-P mercury dime can look just like a MS-64/65 FB dime except for it being struck 10-15% off center.

I won such a MS-63FB mercury dime in a B&M auction five years ago and it is clearly market graded by PCGS!

Generally, I would go for the 65, if it had nicer luster. It would depend on the individual coins, though.

I would prefer the overall nicer looking coin, which would probably, although not necessarily, be the 65.

Mostly everyone is for the higher grade vesus a more full stike.

depends very much on the date, obviously a 1945 just in MS-60 FB would be better than ms-65.

if your asking this question out of "registry set" concerns, your hosed anyhow. better off to just collect the coin if you LIKE it, regardless of "fb", grade, whatever

Me I'd pick the better struck coin. The 63 FB would be well struck or it wouldn't be FB so it probably has a small tick in the prime focals or some hits in the fields. Me I'm willing to trade off some hits & a lower numerical if other qualities of the coin are superlative. While the 65 non-FB might not have as many contact marks it's not fully struck and that's an issue with me. Who can see a few ticks on something as small as a dime anyway but that's coming from a Morg collector, a few ticks is not an issue with me.
Of course I'm talking normal average coins here; if either of them are dipped out, fingerprinted, ugly toned or otherwise problem coins then they are automatically precluded from being prefered by me.

Excellent point and oh so true just because of a little split in the middle band..... Early date almost Full Band Mercs are a complete steal at the prices they sell for.
