Drugs in sports

Kudos to President Bush for saying what we all know... All you have to do is look at a Rookie Bonds Card and then then look at a new card of him. It looks like two different people. Even "Arnold" said it was pervasive in his sport. Baseball owners will cringe at any effort to ban "workout" supplements. Fans would stop showing up at the ball parks if home runs started to decrease each year.
We all know owners are driven by the almighty dollar!! But until big name players start stepping up to the plate as role models, it will be business as usual watching young players turn into the HULK.
Maybe it will take a player kealing over running the bases to wake up the union.
Look at what happened when the umpire passed away behind home plate a few years back. All of the sudden, Umpire Assoc, started ordering them to loose weight or you don't ump.
So my question tonight is (And i don't care what sport) who will be the first big star to say "I AM CLEAN" and show by example?

  • good question. however, i have no answer. i personally do not believe any bonds, mcgwire, or sosa was (is?) juicing. there may be some sort of supplement, like the kinds anyone can walk into gnc and get, but i don't think they are into hard core roids. at the same time i don't think they could be that one come clean guy. even if they are clean of an illegal substance, some may consider these legal gnc type supplements just as bad. thome is someone that comes to mind that could get away with it and be considered credible. he is a beast, and so is delgado who could do it also. baseball seems the only sport that this really hits home to. basketball, yea right. hockey isn't as mainstream down here, and while they may be in great physical condition, they are not monsters. ever since alzado (RIP), football has cracked down hard on steroid use and all drugs for that matter. even the smallest player in the nfl makes bonds look like a chump, everyone in the nfl is huge!! i think this is mainly a baseball issue, and always will be until they impose full testing, not this random job they have now.

I can't believe someone actually thinks ball players are on drugs...WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats crazy...these guys are our heros and role models, they aren't going to risk that for a few
    more homers.

These guys are in the weight room and on the practice diamond improving their skills! Bonds was a beast
in 02 because the guy lifted weights every day...no... every hour! Then in 2003 he dropped but only because
he was signing free for kids or talking to his media buddies! I would hate to see what would happen
if old Barry Bonds juiced... the guy would probably freakin hit 73 homers or something...heck he might
rip 10 of them into the water there in right!

Take Javy Lopez...a real class guy, likes the fans and wants to see them happy...well we all knew
he was a power hitter but he let Chipper and Andrew do all the work...well suddenly he thinks the
fans want more and what does he do? He hits the weight room and suddenly can see the ball
like it is a beachball and now he is hitting everything yard.....now thats a hero!

Sure there those who juice like Caminitti....but look where he is? Lyle Alzado....I don't see him around
    anymore!

These guys are as clean as they come! They just happen to be better than the slugs like Mantle and
Williams who came before them! Heck if Javy played with the Yankees we would be talking
hall already! Bench, Fisk, Lopez...sounds good to me!

Ball players only care about one thing...and thats the fans, they wouldn't pull one over on us by
using drugs to keep their jobs...heck we can't juice up to move more boxes or flip more burgers...it
wouldn't be fair and their first priority are you and I,,,heck there are probably a few of them right
now reading this looking for ways to make us happier!

    Hi Barry!

my take on this subject is this!! i am a gym rat. Problem is right now there are supplements you can take, that are at gnc, or any gym you work out at.That are just as potent as steroids. one steroid comes to mind is Primobolan which was huge about 5 years ago. there is a supplement they sell at gym's that says primolbolan on the bottle but its missing one ingredient from being the real steroid.
These supplements are as potent as steroids themselves. Mcgwire took Andro which is just as strong as any steroid.Creatine is one heck of a good supplement which many weightlifters compare to steroids.

So if these guys are taking the juice( which im positive some are). What about the guys that are taking the supplements that they sell at gnc??? Will this hurt there role model status?

The thing about this is if home runs start declining to 40 a year being tops!!!fans will never respect it (only die hards will). We all Want to see that chase for 75 home runs, that creates excitement!! and without the drugs ill go out on a limb here and say barry bonds record will never be challenged!!!
So i think maybe now is a good time to shorten the baseball season and add more playoff teams! i think baseball should make there playoff format like football. you would have 12 playoff teams and imagine the fans excitement of the wild card race with those 2 extra playoff teams!! heck maybe every stadium would sell out in august and september and the whole sports collectables would take off more also!

Kuhlman makes a good point. I am not a gym guy and really do not what legal supplements are out there and what ones really are as effective as illegal supplements. Are these just as bad for baseball? I say yes. What if Aaron, Mike Schmidt or Mantle had these available? Or Mays - forgettaboutit! Mays might have hit 900 dingers and Aaron may have had 1200 .... who knows

Baseball is becoming less and less popular with me. I still love the game and memories, but todays game is much different that the one I remember.

I am not taking anything away from Bonds, as he is one of the three greatest players I have ever seen play. When he breaks Aaron's record - and he most likely will - what will be said about him, the record, the questions about performance drugs, and baseball in general?

JS, I have to debate this with you. I think that a majority of modern ball players are in it for the money. A-Rod is a good example of that. Huge contract with Texas and now he wants out before he honors that contract. And for what? More money?

Looking for 81-84 Topps Stickers in PSA 9 or better, 81 Topps Scratch offs, 83 Topps Fold outs in PSA 8 or better, 83 Fleer Stamps and 81/86 Fleer Star Stickers in PSA 9 or better.

Red - Joe was being sarcastic.

As far as Arod, no one can blame him for taking the money. As far as the renogiation late last year, he was willing to take a paycut. The Players Association prevented that, as that may have set a precedent.

Baseball has a lot of things wrong with it, and betting on the game is far from being the worst. Far from being the worst .....

Yeah, I said it again ......... image
