All: Tonight, please keep Gosoxbosox (Tom Papa) newborn son Joseph Gretzky in your hearts and minds. Tonight, Tom and his wife are spending their second night in the hospital with Joseph who is battling the RSV virus. The next few days are the critical ones in fighting this respitory virus that can cause fluid to build up in the lungs and can cause lifelong breathing problems or much worse, in situations like this every little bit helps.

Hoping all turns out well for Joseph.
Thanks for all of your kind words. Joey was made it through the critical 5 day period the doctors were worried about. They feel he's now clear from life threatening issues. He still has periods of choking since his chest is pretty full but he seems to be on the road to recovery.
Only time will tell if he'll have other "issues" that may have developed from this. Typical issues are varying levels of asthma. We were very lucky. There were many many infants with this virus in the hospital and many of them were much sicker than Joey was. It's been a frightening few days to say the least.
Thanks again for the well wishes. Although many of us have never met face-to-face it is easy to see the brotherhood that exists between us collectors. It's truly a great thing we have here

I grew out of my asthma in my early 20's. The doctor attributed to a lot weightlighting (which he said strengthened my lungs) and not smoking as a teenager (including marijuana) which going up in the late 70's there was a lot of peer pressure to do so.
It's great your son is on the road to recovery, but if the doctors say he's developed asthma, he can lead a normal life, especially with the improved medications in recent time. When I was young, medications I took would stop an asthma attack AFTER it occurred...nowadays, the medications are more proactive in the preventive measure.
Sincerely,

My nephew has RSV, and I'm happy to say he pullled through fine. Hopefully, Tom's child enjoys a similar recovery.
There's nothing worse than having a newborn with complications. I wouldn't wish that on anybody.
I'm glad to hear everything's starting to look up. I can relate to your situation, as I went through the exact same thing with my infant daughter about 2 years ago. I had never even heard of RSV before the night we had to rush her to the hospital.... and I certainly know the helpless feeling you get watching them treat your child, and talking about the low oxygen levels, fluids, etc. It was, without a doubt, the longest 2 weeks of my life, and I was amazed at how many children were in there for the same reason.
I can tell you that you have weathered the worst of the storm, if you are now on day 5. Some more good news is that most of the kids (including my daughter) make a full recovery once the virus is contained, and do not end up with any long term breathing problems. There are a few good websites with lots of information about RSV, and I'm sure you've got all of the brochures from the hospital by now.
For those of you that don't know, here's a link to some info below. It's amazing that it's not as well known as some of the other childhood illnesses, considering the effect it can have on some kids lives. The doctor's will even tell you that it's reaching an epidemic level nowadays, and it's frustrating because they really don't know why some kids react to it worse than others.

Your family is in our prayers... and I hope to see you back on the boards soon, with your biggest problem being which cards to buy next.

Thanks for the uplifting messages. It seems some of you have fought this ugly battle too. We are now on day 9 and he seems as bad as he did on day 4. Yet the doctors say he's no longer in danger of choking.
Two days ago he seemed great but yesterday he was again choking on mucus and vomiting. But I assume the doctors know what they're talking about. I wish his lungs would clear up already.
I'm sure the road to recovery is near.
Tom
