This is funny and scary...

Vincecarder once started this thread:

This Lebron James RC will SMASH records!!!!

Well, the card ended at $13,300 and the winning bidder has a good feedback, well he didn't pay! The seller eventually had to relist the card!

Here is the negative feedback comment he received:

BID $13,300 ON MY AUCTION AND THEN WOULD NOT PAY. AVOID THIS BUYER. RUINS EBAY
Reply by doug7878: was automatically outbid people that bid more cancelled bids not my fault

So to me it looks like he was bidding for fun thinking that he was going to get outbid, but then look what happened! And I know many people here on these boards usually do the same thing.

Well, now you guys have been warned, because you never know. image

  • The guy doesn't seem that great to me. Give it a few years and watch most of his cards come down in price.

$13000 is a lot of money for a Lebron James card. There are other jersey cards, there are other autograph cards and this card is numbered to 25. Does that mean that the 1 of 1 cards are worth even more?
  • I surely don't bid $13,000+ just for "fun" on a card not expecting to pay if it's the winning bid. That kind of money is good reason to be very serious about the matter.
  • Ranch...always trying to stir up S@it huh.

Well let's see here.....take a look at that auction...there were 60 bids on it and many of them are legit bids. This card will sell and it will crack 10K....it will probably get slabbed by PSA or BGS and if it can pull off a Gem Mint grade it will add a couple thousand on the value.

If this guy becomes a superstar (doesn't have to be the next Jordan)...wins championships etc....this will be his greatest card as the SPX spectrum jersey # RC is tops in many collectors books. It may be hard for someone who dreams...err...collects vintage cards but yes this card can be worth a fortune in a few years.

Lebron could also break his leg....or become an average player and this card will drop like crazy but hey..people play the stock market for a reason...to make money. You can make some major cash off this card..you just have to have the money to play with.

I bid much more than that on a card that I didn't really intend to win. It was a PSA 9 that was at 65% of SMR after I bid with 2 weeks to go in a Mastro auction. I ended up winning the stupid thing. That was a costly mistake.

David - PSA 9 of whom? None of your former '49 or '51 Bowman cards in PSA 9 seems likely to draw that price.

I had the lebron james on my watch list and this auction ended with 2 days left?? i was wondering how that happened? so there is something fishy going on here.

Nick -- It was actually a 51 Bowman Mantle PSA 9 that never made it into the Registry.
  • Vargha,
I stand corrected - I've bid into the significant 4 figures for cards I didn't expect to win. My bids were nearly always at a point that I could live with if they won and always for vintage cards. I usually did it to try to define which previous bidders were going to be serious players at the end.

To bid a large number for modern stuff that could backfire, as in potential flash in the pan cards that may have no market someday, is downright foolhardy unless you have the card pre-sold.

He's still able to type, so I won't take that bet.

Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.
  • This guy will be a BUST!

Sorry but this guy will not be a bust!! He is 18 years old and he is scoring over 30 points in some games in the nba.He is polished with his interviews also. The media loves him. As for his rookie cards go the #d ones and auto's will always hold there value. Not the value they are bringing right now, the value they bring next year will tell the story. If you pay 200$ for an auto from lets say ud prospects next year id say you will get your money back maybe more 10 years from now. Buying his cards this year is stupid bc the prices are crazy. That goes for any high profile rookie card like hideki matsui look at his cards now on ebay they have deflated.
I will say this though next year i will invest a lot of my money in lebron cards bc if you do it this year your gonna lose your a$$!!
If i pull a rookie card from a pack i sell it right away even lebron james. when ud prospects first came out his rookies from that were selling for 40-80$ the first 3 days 2 weeks later 3$ a piece!!!!!!!!! damn those people who bought must feel violated a week later.
I sold a hideki matsui ud patch collection card for 125$ i listed it the day it was released maybe the first one on ebay. now that card sells for 5$. so new stuff i sell right away then i will buy 6 months later and sit on it. for 10-20 years.
