Nice 51 Bowman Baseball On The Registry

I saw this set just browsing around. What caught my attention was some of the interesting remarks
on some of the players. I thought this was a great read. Not only do I enjoy looking at all
the scans of each card but I like the fact there were many comments listed. It seems that this
collector knows some of the players too!

Bob was the pitcher who walked 3' 7" midget Eddie Gaedel on 4 straight pitches. Owner Bill Veeck's publicity stunt was short-lived as Gaedel was barred from baseball 2 days later.

  • That was a great read. I wish more sets like that would appear. After all of the clues I would guess it is owned by Joe Nossek. I hope he comes by and chats more about it...if it is him.

The scan and notes for card #314 was the most interesting "extra" for me..

Wow--Jow Nossek is a collector--this I did not know. The comments are terrific--great stuff-thanks Joe. Now tell us the true inside inside story about Sandy Valdespino and Zoilo Versalles.

Joe's a very cool guy. He gave me an autographed ball of the Big Hurt. Some of those cards in his set were once mine as well.

I thought this was the guy you made mention of awhile back David.

You had his card posted from 64 after doing a transaction with him,I think.

I love it when people add comments to the set. Aside from the things I learned from the comments themselves, I learned something interesting (to me) when I thought he made an error in the Ned Garver comment. I knew Steve Carlton won 27 games for the '72 Phillies when they only won 59 games overall. Looking it up, I find that they "only" lost 97, meaning they skipped 6 whole games. I'm sure Lefty would've joined Ned for that dubious distinction if they had played a full season.

Thanks for the link, aconte! With all the Set Registry awards
they hand out, they should make a category to reward collectors
that put so much effort into making their sets so enjoyable to view.

HELIONAUT - Your Harry S Truman quote was actually a Dwight Eisenhower quote, here it is in its entirety....jay

"When I was a small boy in Kansas, a friend of mine and I went fishing and as we sat there in the warmth of the summer afternoon on a river bank, we talked about what we wanted to do when we grew up. I told him that I wanted to be a real major league baseball player, a genuine professional like Honus Wagner. My friend said that he'd like to be President of the United States. Neither one of us got our wish"
