Anyone familiar with the Dallas area in terms of card shops?
I'm gonna be there for work all next week and was wondering if there are any cool shops to visit to possibly pick up some 1950 Bowman baseball upgrades for my set.

Dallas is probably the worst place to own a card shop or to do a show. I have lived here my whole life and I know of no card shops worthy to visit. The first card shop in Dallas was Wayne Grove, First Base Cards, in 1978. His card shop was awesome. I can still remember visiting his shop every Saturday with my father. He closed his shop in 1994 and went to be the head editor for Beckett Vintage. The few shops that are still alive have built their sales around the new items.

Dallas, Austin, Lubbock, everywhere else....for not much
Hey Shane...
First Base Sportscards in Dallas was really a "true" card shop. Wayne Grove was the best there was...I visited his shop almost everyday during 1985-1987. .....Remember...he had all his commons in those long white cardboard boxes behind his back....1952's....1957's...60's....all the way up to current years (way before upper deck and the onslought of the late 80's...). Every card he had was nice..AND in order..."Hey Wayne"..."Let me take a look at box #5 of the 1963's"...It was great.
It's funny how things turn out...Wayne Grove was partners with two other guys...Gervice Ford and Dr. Jim Beckett....Yup...The one and only from the Beckett services....There was a kid that came in to help Wayne with his "sorting" each day after school....Dan Hitt was his name. Bright kid that really could sort those cards... Check him out now at Beckett Publishing....Just open up a Beckett Baseball Monthly and read the credits...He's now a VP manager big shot....When I met him, he was hardly old enough to shave...LOL...
It's just ironic...
Oh.....ugh... Sorry onegoucho..... I kinda went off on a dream there....Good luck on your search for a Dallas Shop...Might try Arlington Sportscards (Midway between Dallas and Fort Worth...) Wanda and John Marcus used to own it, don't know if they still do...???...) Wanda hosted a couple of Nationals that were held in Texas..1987 was one of them I think...

CHEERS!!
Check out my ebay auctions listed under seller ID: jeej
I haven't found any good card shops for vintage stuff - in nrmt+ condition, anyway.
SMP Sportscards in Grapevine has tons of late 80's - current wax.
You can usually find Cowboys stuff at most shops, but most places up here only carry new stuff and the MTG stuff
If you do find one, let us know - there are about 10 people on the boards from Dallas and nobody has found a decent shop yet

Check Beckett's show calendar, you may luck out if you're there on a Saturday. There's a show fairly frequently at Six Flags Mall (near Six Flags, duh) and I always liked them because even if I didn't find anything great, which I actually usually did, it was free to get into and had a good stadium movie theater.
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs
Nothing on ebay
I agree with 1954, most of the better card shops in the Dallas area have gone out of business; those still open are struggling to compete with the internet. Favorites like Something Old and New, Pros and First Base have all gone out of business for various reasons.
helionaut, sounds like you're talking about JW's Sportscards which I think of as our local version of "Mr. Mint". If desperate for a fix, last number I have is 214-788-5491. He's located on Preston Road north of LBJ Freeway (I-635).
I used to like to go over to Buy Rite Cards in Garland. Steve McHenry had a pretty good inventory of new and vintage material that was reasonably priced. The "regulars" were always playing pack-poker when I went in on Friday afternoons. Not sure if Steve is in business anymore either. Last phone number i have is 972-276-6423. Shane, have you been over there lately?
Nick's, located in Richardson is probably one of the better card shops still around for supplies and new material. They had some vintage the last time I was in there, but it was picked-over to the point it was mostly vg-ex. Phone number is 972-248-2271.
Triple Cards and Collectibles in Plano (Al Gilliland) used to keep a nice inventory of newer material and supplies. Again, I quite going over there once I started collecting vintage cards. Last phone # I have is 972-509-5263.
About an hour north on I-75 located in old downtown Dennison on Main Street is Doug Coleman d/b/a Box Seat Cards. I used to like to drive up there occasionally; enjoyed the small town setting and old-style card shop atmosphere. Doug got more active in memoriabilia but still dabbles in cards a bit. If you want to check it out call him first at 1-800-222-1304 or 903-465-2697.
Lone Star Cards in Carrollton is another store with mostly memoriabilia and new cards with enough older cards to be able to say they have vintage material. No bargains to be found here.
I used to see most of these guys at local card shows but there hasn't been a decent card show in the Dallas area for a year or two.
Happy Hunting,

I have not seen a vintage card shop in 8 years here in the DFW metroplex. I few shows that I have been to seems to be a waste of my time. The good dealers that use to attend the shows, no longer set up because of the people who attend. Most of the collector here really don't collect the vintage stuff.
