$49.95 is a bit much don't you think? This may be like the 1999 Susan B Anthony proof, still for sell at the Mints web site. There will be a few thousand sold but 50k. I may have to eat some crow but I'll have to let this set pass...
I agree with Neptune and DirtroadRider. At first glance, it is a way to show our pleasure with England and their stand with us in Iraq.
But I don't think using the mint is the way to go, and at a premium cost to collectors. The sets will sell I'm sure, but I will pass. I have the coins, and I like them, but not at this cost.
On the other hand, we will see the difference in engraving that the Darkside has known for a long time.
I'm waiting for the Wisconsin Cow to really show our abilities.
If you take a look at the Royal Britsh Mint's web site, you will see that they already have the same set available and labeled as "Liberty and Britannia Two-Coin Silver Set" and appears to be selling for $10 cheaper. Of course, I'm not sure what the shipping and handling charge is.
The British Royal Mint lists a limited issue of 25,000 sets, as opposed to the U.S. Mint listing 50,000. So, I'm not sure if total sets will be 25,000 per mint (U.S. and British) or how it will end up.
<< <i>The Britannia Silver Coin, considered to be in “uncirculated” condition by the British Royal Mint, is what the United States Mint designates as a “reverse proof” finish, with a mirror-like image and frosted background. >>
I have been looking through the British Royal Mint's web site and it appears that this is not the first offering of this type of set. Here is one with a 2002 SAE along with the 2002 silver Britannia.
I guess there is just a bit more marketing going on for the latest version.
I used aRabidChipmunk's link to the British mint and discovered that their s/h charges are $4.95US for a total of $44.90. Still cheaper that the US mint's asking price without S/h. go figure.

Is the Britannia a proof?

Did the SAE in the British packaging have a different mint mark? A SAE with a H mint mark would be neat.
