Rookie Rose PSA 9 under $7500?

Anybody see this one end last night. Could this be the trend now on Rose cards. Granted not the nicest centered i've seen but haven't seen one this low yet.

  • Hi Ed,

The funny thing is, when the seller listed the cards a few months ago, the auction ended at $9,265 with the reserve not met (and an unused BIN of $11,900). I bet he regrets that reserve now!

I agree that it's not the strongest 9 around, but I don't think the closing price is that out of line with previous sales. Over the past three years, despite the high SMR value during that time period, the most I've seen a 9 sell for on eBay was around $8,600 (in late 2001). The one that legacysportsrarities sold in December looked like a stunner, and that only sold for $7,501. In addition, a different 9 that was sold in Superior's March 2003 auction went for $7,590 (including the BP). It seems the card has a fairly steady price point - I just think the SMR on this particular card is too high (currently $9,000) ...

edit: added a little more auction data
  • Hey Robert
I believe though the couple your talking about when buyers fees are added are close to 9000 anyway. Got a feeling we might see a dip in Petes cards for awhile. Maybe we can get a 9 down in the 5 to 6 range then i will hop on board.

  • Great site Ed!

(browsed it while I was checking out this thread)

If the prices were a touch lower, I'd take a few from ya!

There was a Rose in a Mastro auction this past year that sold for over $9300 including the buyers premium.

Robert is right. The Rose rookie typically does not meet PSA 9 SMR pricing, at least the ones I have seen on auction. The one that ended last night was not a good example, as I have seen many more PSA 8's with better centering.

Too bad Pete's rookie is such a boring card, his 64 would have made a much better rookie card.

edited to add: Yo Ed, glad to see you posting here ... there are a lot of great people on these boards.

Indeed, you have a very nice site Ed. But, wow...your prices are (to borrow from Crazy Eddie) insane!

    Sample :

    1980 Topps Rickey Henderson #482 PSA 9 MINT $525

SMR is only $170, and I just bought one of these last week for $175 including FedEx shipping. I think you would sell more cards to board members here with pricing somewhere in the vicinity of the SMR.

  • You would be suprised at the sales off the site. I generally am. Most of the stuff that is extremely high is because i paid at one time extremely high. In all reality if the stuff on my site sells GREAT if not GREAT. If i really wanted to unload everything at ridiculous prices i would just throw on E-Bay. But in no real hurry to sell. Thanks for looking though. ED

Ed, I completely understand. I know a few dealers who have nice collections who feel the same way. And, I am not surprised people might pay a bit more to get good service from a reliable dealer. I prefer gambling on Ebay, but that's just me...your site certainly is worth a look, though!

  • Ed - I hope the price drops that far for you, but wouldn't be surprised if it didn't. There still seems to be very strong interest (even in weaker 9s) at the $7,500 level, even after all the recent Rose stuff, so current prices (give or take a little) might be the floor on the price. I think it's safe to say the pop for Rose 9 rookies isn't exploding anytime soon, so there will always be demand with very limited supply. You know you want a 9 image.

You know, the more I think about all of this, the more I think Rose cards will remain steady in price. I (unfortunately) think the events of the past few weeks seriously hurt his chances of getting reinstated and/or elected to the Hall. Ironically, I think that will help sustain the value of his cards and memorabilia. It's somewhat related to the "buy on the rumor, sell on the news" stock phenomena. Many times, a player's rookie card rises a bit as Hall election is anticipated, but once they actually get in, card prices fall off a bit. By Rose not getting in, the issue of if he belongs or not will continue to be hotly contested, fueling strong card prices. It will be interesting to see what the next year brings ...

  • Hey Robert
I agree. I have always thought that Roses cards saw better than average prices because he was NOT in the Hall. I really think though he will make it in but be banned from everything else. I just think Selig is looking for a fancy way to present it without pissing to many people off. Oh well i guess we will see.
