Advice on Player Sets...

I'm wondering where else to try and locate Dale Murphy cards in at least a strong 8 or better. I have had decent luck using ebay, but what other places should I be looking? Thanks for the help.

    Chris:

There are a large number of team set specialists out there who may be able to help you obtain Braves team sets from certain oddball years and issues from which Murphy had cards. If you buy these team sets in bulk from such dealers -- you often get some factory-fresh material that is great for submission. The price increase for paying for the whole team set may be somewhat nominal -- and it may ultimately be one of the best ways to obtain some of the rarer issues. For my Mike Schmidt player set -- I was basically able to pull 9s on OPC from 1984 - 1987 (a very very tough feat for 1985 and 1986) through this methodology -- and I paid significantly less than I would have paid for an already slabbed version of same in such grade. Sometimes you will not find strong 8s -- but dollar for dollar, this has been a good avenue for me.

    Hi Chris,
I've hit the same wall with Alan Trammell cards. I'm now taking a different route and starting to submit raw cards for grading. It's fairly easy to find raw cards on ebay, I buy them cheap (usually in team set form) and then pick out the best to send in. I'll find out how I did in the next couple of weeks. Hope this helps,
    Jim

Also -- not sure how often I see this anymore -- but 2 to 3 years ago, it was very easy for me to pick up 800-card lots of Mike Schmidt from any mid to late 1980s Topps/Fleer/Donruss set. By going through those, and submitting the 5 or 10 best -- I almost always was assured of some 10s, some good trading material, and then could divest the rest of the card lot, which I am sure was still replete with more 9s and 10s. From good dealers -- they are basically straight from case breaks -- and it is easy to pick out the good ones from the dogs.

  • Chris - If you are interested in some Dale Murphy cards, I have some that I may be willing to part with. You can take a look at my basic player set and see the cards that I have added there and I do have other raw cards. Just let me know.

Edit: It is listed under my name - David S. Green

  • David, thanks for the reply. I would be interested in the '78, the '90 Leaf, and maybe the '84 Topps. Let me know what you are willing to get rid of, and at what price. Thanks.

I will go to big show(sometimes smaller) and pick thru the cards. I will buy 2 or 3 of the best copies and when I have time eliminate 80% of what I bought after going thru them again. If I buy 300 at a show I will usualy have 10 of so worth submitting. And the nice thing is if you buy a few hundred of a particular player a deal can be made. And I have a dealer/collector friendship with a local dealer he will pick up cards I need for me.

are congrats in order ? your friend, lee
  • Every now and then I find a new Eddie Murray. Im almost already maxed out on top grades for most stuff thats at least partially available.

Vending boxes seem to be a good source. Maybe some card shops even in their older common boxes.

Im close to just submitting some of my own stuff.
Eddie Murray, Will Clark and Darin Erstad collector, check my wantlists for what I need.

    mikeschmidt-

Let me echo speeder's sentiments- congrats! My wife gave birth to our first child on 12/27, and it's been an experience I'll never forget. Hope you and your wife are enjoying it just as much.

    speeder and boopots:

Thank you kindly for your kind wishes. The icon attached here really does not capture Drew's joie de vivre. I am simply not as technologically advanced as many others on these boards -- but I tried.

My wife and I are having an absolutely wonderful time. Drew has grown by leaps and bounds, nearly 25% in only 5 weeks. It's crazy how much he has changed already. I miss him dearly. Through a best of times/worst of times scenario, after a four-week respite, I am pretty much only seeing my wife and newborn on weekends. I could ramble on about long-term greater good, etc., but I'd feel like I'm just trying to convince myself and that others do not care.

Boopots - a special congratulations on your new addition -- you must be so excited! It is amazing how such a dramatic change in life really brings the rest of everything back into focus. I love coming on here and talking about baseball cards -- but you really did not see me here at all during those four weeks I was spending with my newborn, and whenever I get to see him. Cards are fun, but life is much more imrortant.

    Cheers-
