would you leave negative ebay feedback if retaliatory (-) is likely?

I take pride in being a good ebayer, with 99.8% positive feedback. I've only had 2 negatives from the same person who decided to use retaliation against me.

I'm having an issue with a new bidder who for no reason decided to send me profanity laced e-mails (btw - the one person who left me a negative also did this - I guess there is some pattern here), I guess to try to get himself off the hook for the auction.

I always leave negatives for non paying bidders after 30-35 days. Many times, it is for users who already have some negatives, and sometimes I feel a little bad when it brakes a perfect record, but I think it's the right thing to do.

Now to my question, would you leave a negative feedback for someone and risk a retaliatory negative feedback? Is it worth it? When you see a seller with a couple of negatives and several hundred postives, does that influence your decision to bid or pass? Do some of you who have perfect feedback just disregard these types of situations and move on to preserve your feedback?

I think someone is going to suggest that these types of things can always be worked out, but again, I'm receiving lots of profanity, and immature comments (ie. I'm going to tell everyone on ebay you are a bad seller).

  • I think it's worth it, I'm not sure though because I haven't left one, yet. But I'm very close to leaving someone a neg. This guy I won an auction from on Dec. 30th, demands in his auction, payment within 7 days, no problem since I always mail a postal money order out next day anyway. So payment goes out on dec. 31st, and I'm still sitting here with no card. O.K., lets go back to before I placed my bid. I emailed him via ebay ask seller a question, asking how fast he would ship card, within 5 minutes I had a reply from him saying next day after postal money order is received because he works at the post office and he is there everyday anyway. So I place my bid and win MY card. Then I wait, and wait, and wait some more. Well then I get tired of waiting so I email him again, that was on saturday jan 17th., after the mailman left and I still didn't have my card. Still no response, nothing! 5 minutes to reply before when I wanted to place a bid, 3 days and counting after he already has my money.

So my answer is YES! Teach them a lesson. You'll get a neg back, but it is the right thing to do. That jerk that won your auction probably outbid somebody that really wanted that card, and would have paid immediately.image

And I'm about 2 more emails and one more week away from leaving my boy a neg.image

  • Always. If the buyer doesn't pay, I give a negative. Otherwise the feedback system is meaningless. And don't forget to get a fee credit. Ebay won't suspend a non-paying bidder for negative feedback, but they always suspend once the get 4 fee refunds.

I've left dozens of negatives for deserving deadbeats over the years, and only recieved 1 retalitory negative. (my other neg was an error and I refuse to pay $20 to have it removed). I just left a comment that the neg was retaliation.

Perfect feedback is nice, but I don't hesitate to buy from sellers with a few negatives, as long as there is no pattern or "red flags" showing a potential problem - like too many "the post office lost it" responses. However, I do think twice about sellers that leave abusive or angry responses when they receive a neg.

anything over 99% is good enough for me...

however i just wont bid if less than 99% ...i thought i was getting a great deal once from this seller with around 97% and i got a very good lesson. no cards after a month and a huge hassle ..not worth it.

CALLEOCHO - I don't go by just the raw #, I often read the neg complaints and see if they will apply to me If I'm the winning bidder. If complaints are "takes forever to ship" "never rec'd my lots" "items packed poorly & damaged" - then I'll walk away. But all negative feedbacks are not the same, i know of a big time dealer that was given a negative cause the PSA flip was creased, which naturally the dealer had no control over. I know of another dealer (a friend who sells CD's) was given a negative because his positive feedback was too short!! He left a positive like "A++++" and was neg'd by that...jay

Yes, I also leave negs for non paying bidder and file the alerts et al.....I also add all of these folks to my banned bidding list as well so that cannot make it rough for me at a later time..

So far, I have never left any negative feedback even though most would agree that I have been wronged in a few situations which would merit it. I just didn't want any retaliatory feedback and then pay $20 to have it removed. This, by the way, has been from a buyers point of view--I never sold. I always pay for my winnings immediately---there is no other excuse (except maybe a sudden accident, but that's rare and only entitles a delay).

What I really dislike is when I make my payment on time and get no feedback. What more can I do but pay the seller on time? I have religiously left feedback to everyone I do business with. Lately, I have not given 3 sellers feedback because of misrepresentation of product or damages. Yes, it should have been a negative, but because they left me no feedback, I have to assume they will only retaliate. I heard one can leave feedback after 90 days if one has the ebay # stored somewhere.

JTcards has left me no feedback on a recent transaction even though I paid on time. Because he is a big dealer and not likely going to pull any funny stuff, I just left him a positive feedback because I was happy with his service. He may never leave me feedback, but I did my part. He won't extort more money from me, so I was secure to leave him feedback. Sellers should leave feedback before the buyer.

i totally agree Jay. but sometimes it could be pages and pages to look through.

actually when it comes to vintage PSA ..i hardly have a hard time wether buying or selling ...the few hassles i have had on ebay have been with modern stuff usually ungraded and usually under 10 bucks.

BTW ...for the people who still havent tried buying something from Jay ...nicest dealer you could find ...how about this for service , he sent me a card i won on ebay before he actually got the money.

  • Hi,

You mention the abusive e-mails. This is from Ebays help pages:

<< <i>User-to-user threats - Threats of bodily harm made via email. Remember, eBay can only act when there are emailed threats of physical harm. All other forms of harassment should be reported to the proper authorities. If you experience email harassment, report it to your Internet Service Provider (ISP), too. >>

If he is making threats of any type forward them to his and your own ISP and get his e-mail account blocked as well. If he has made any threats of bodily harm (i.e. I'll kick your a** if you don't do what I want) then report him to Ebay as well.

    Hope that helps

  • There are some wackos that buy on Ebay, that's for sure!
  • In a word YES!

There is too large a percentage of scum and scams on ebay right now. The only way any of it will be cleaned up is through good ebayers. Ebay has their thumb in a discreet location when it comes to doing anything. Besides, if everything you say is exactly correct, you could neg him and then get your retaliatory one removed through square trade. Although it costs $20, sometimes it could be worth it.

  • leaving negative feedback is a tool that should be utilized, fear of reprisal is kind of like wimping out. most people are receptive to an amicable solution for most any difference, the people who cannot be reasoned with will most likely have their fair share of negs regardless.
