Ooh! that's a really cool coin! image

    Listed as Italy, KM 51, 50th Anniversary of the Kingdom (1911), mintage 2 million -- $2.5/F, 5/VF, 10/XF. (Info as of 1993)

Did that come out of a bank bag??
  • spoonspoon Posts: 2,798 ✭✭✭
That same design was also used on the 2 and 5 lire coins of that year.. but those are kinda pricey.
  • Spoon...... not a bank bag. I can not remember where I actually got it......image. It really does embarasse me that I have almost no records of my coins.
I have not any background on these but would it be correct for me to think it is F, (maybe a little better)?

  • I've got a fake 5 lire coin with the same design. It looks very genuine, and I am quite sure that it's made of silver (it is massive) but the weight is several gram too low. This fake is supposed to be quite common - so beware!

    Nice coin, Newbie!

Ah, don't worry.. I tried keeping records for a while but I started buying so much that I just gave up image If I buy something online though I'll usually keep an email or some reminder but junk box purchases are forgotten image

I'd call that one a good, strong F. But I'm not much of an expert in grading. Someone else should come along soon to corroborate our opinion image

Those fakes are common! I saw 4 different fakes of that one and the 1914 5 lire (with chariots) at the local show last Saturday. Gladly all were marked as fakes. They are pretty good looking but a quick inspection in person should always be able to prove them false.
  • I had a pretty good list some time back on Excel. I had a computer crash and lost all of it and my CD with the Excell program on it is damaged so now I don't have either.......image

  • The design is described in the Schon catalog as 'allegory of the unification; industrial plants, bow of a ship, plough'.
It was also used on a gold 50 Lire coin as well as the silver 2 and 5 Lire pieces already mentioned.

I like it, too- too bad the color's uneven. That's a nice design. And so much Italian copper from that era comes all mangled up, usually.

  • The "high spots" are worn to a different color. Not quite as bad as my photo shows but certainly noticable.

Newbie, thanks for posting what is one of my favorite coin designs. I think JC #167 has some more info.

I like your picture!! I'm really glad you like the coin.

Wayne, one thing I started doing a few months back was puting a small label in the other side of the flip with the particulars of the coin. Because I'm getting old, I guess, and it's really hard for me to try to keep up with all that information. So I write the date, denomination, country, condition, and any particular traits (such as die cracks, errors, etc), as well as the die orientation (coin vs. medal alignment) on the front of that paper insert. In the future, I'll add Krause numbers or something like that. Then, on the reverse, I write other pertinent details, such as month and year of purchase, from whom, the cost (or if it was a gift), and if I've used acetone or MS70 on the coin, and whether or not I've scanned it. Plus if I've used it as a Jester's Challenge, or Die/Variety series.

One of these months, after I get done scanning everything, I'll try to build a database with that info, plus a link to the scan. Then when I get a digital camera, I'll shoot pictures of the coins I like the most.

That is, if I don't find anything more productive to do with my life. image

  • Hey Jester - I was going to pst something similar.
At one time I had all my coins in a spreadsheet, with where I bought them, price paid, etc. Then the computer crashed, in part due to my 2-year old son, and I lost all the electroni c records and was too lazy to type it all in again. Now I write on the back of my 2x2 where I got the coin from, when, and how much. It gets pretty neat to read the back of them after a couple of years. It can also be sentimental - I have some coins from friends that have passed away. It's nice to remember the keepsakes.

Kind of easy to see the high points of that coin.

I've meant to respond to this post at least half a dozen times but haven't. I find this coin very appealing because it has some of the classical elements and style of the coins of its era. I can think of several coins, including the French 10 centimes of the period that it reminds me of. I would enjoy owning at least an XF example of the type and will be on the lookout for one. Thanks for showing- I really like it!image

    It's also one I haven't seen before-always enjoy that!
