IDEAS PLEASE ON A 60,S BB SET TO START

OK You bb guys.I have always stuck to football but im ready to take a stab at a 60,s mainsteam issue baseball set. Color is big for me i also like woodgrains so 62 comes to mind but i would want something that could be done with a gpa of about 8.20 an where avg common nines fall in the $50 to $75 range max so not sure 62,s fit the bill. As for my fb sets i am working on 55aa,s 66/67/68 topps and 67 philly,s if that helps in what im looking for picture wise. Any ideas would be great not really up on bb prices like i am on fb so any helpfull hints would be great. thanks ART

  • SKINSFAN,

The design of the 1968 set, to me, is in the same vein as the 1962 woodgrain. There is a ton of product on the market. 9s are pretty readily available and can be found in the $20 to $50 range with obvious exceptions.

Good luck with whatever you choose.
  • My favorite baseball set of the 60's is the 1963 Topps set. I like the solid color bottom border.....just a thought. Whatever you do don't start a 71 set!imageimage

If you are big on color, the 1960 and 1963 sets would be fun to pursue.

  • And who can forget the most colorful set of the '60's, the 1965 Topps set. Not sure on prices for those though, always seem too high for my grasp...

  • are you talking about a regular issue set? if so, i would choose 1965.

if you're looking to put together a smaller set that includes most of the stars from the '60's, i would recommend 1964 Topps Giants. from my limited knowledge, they seem to be readily attainable in 8, and a lot cheaper than their standard counterparts. as an added bonus, theyre great looking (especially when displayed)

If you're looking for colors on the borders, I think 1965 takes the
cake, but if you're looking for some of the best colors in the photos,
you should give a lot of consideration to the 1967 set. Many collectors
think this set features the best photography Topps ever produced. Add
to that a couple nice HOF rookies with Carew & Seaver, as well as an SMR
value on the commons that you're looking for, and I think you've got
a new set to build. 1967 or 1965 -- you can't go wrong either way.

Best of luck with whatever choice, Art, and be sure to let us know who
needs to look out for you on ebay. image

    my two cents,

    Art....

It won't be the same over here in "football land" without you.... they'll be so many PSA 9's floating around we all won't know what to do.

Oh well, I'm sure we'll manage somehow. Good luck in (cough) baseball land. image

P.S. I can't stop smiling cause Joe Gibbs and the gang is back.... baby!!

  • mike dont worry i might start a 50 bowman and 57 football set as well, baseball just to pass time waiting for more football nines to surface. But i must agree he,s back and he is no avg Joe. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SKINS. leaning toward 63 or 65 bb by the way guys!! maybe a nice rose rookie to start with. heck you can bet on itimage
  • I'm not a PSA collector but I do buy and sell 'em frequently. Strictly from a baseball card perspective, my vote would go to the 1969 set because it has the last regular card of Mickey Mantle, the poster boy for Topps cards. There's also something to be said, I think, for starting at the most recent 60's set and working backwards in years in the future. Getting some of the low pop '69 commons can be a challenge but that's part of the fun, right?

    Scott
  • I'm partial to the 1960 Topps set because of the horizontal setup of the cards, but the 9s probably fall outside your range. I'd agree that the 65s are pretty cool too.

Good luck if you start the 1950 Bowman Football set. I was able to put together a near set (missing 20 or so) of PSA 8s 2 years ago for less than $13k. AWESOME set!

    Either way, good luck!
  • SKINSFAN and all others...long time reader and starting some sets myself, but I'm staying football (for now). I like the 60 baseball set myself. 63 set is awesome as well. I'm hoping to work on few older football sets in PSA 7 and then later go for a 1970 set in as many 9's as I can. Patience and money will be the key.

I enjoy all the great information on here…brad

    Skinsfan,
Whatever you do STAY AWAY from the 1969 set. Its HORRIBLE. Lousy colors and NO team cards. Just the worst set Topps ever made.
  • Skinsfan,
Glad to see you divert some of that mountain of cash away from FB for a change.
Personally, based on the items you describe, I think 65 might be the best bet. But any of the three odd year sets you mention would be good. I have picked at the 65 and 67 from time to time when they are cheap and I am long on cash and have picked up some of each year pretty reasonably. 65 may be more manageable though without the high number rookies and stars that 67 has.
I would also throw in a vote for the 64 Stand ups as it is not too big of a set but the pricing still reflects some competitive forces.
You can't go wrong. Just spend money on BB ....... any BB.

    Hey Art,

We already have enough people over here in 50 Bowman's Football chasing Verno's collection..... Between Toppi, Card-on, Davalillo, the HOF guys, and a few others, it's already hard enough to get an 8. The NM+ raws are all either trimmed or have paper wrinkles, and 9's.... forget about it, unless you want to take out a second mortgage to get a few of them.

And speaking of baseball.... not..... How great is it going to be to watch Joe Gibbs turn this team around, and see all of the old coachs go at it in the NFC East every week. I heard Darrell Green's even going to come work with the team now.

    VintageVikes -

If you're thinking of doing a 1957 Football set (or 1966) let me know, as I have a bunch of PSA 7's, a few 8's, and some NM raw I'd let you have fairly cheap.

    Onegaucho -

You got any of them 1950 Bowman 8's left?

    Hey Fuzz,

I didn't see your post earlier. I never got to thank you for letting me sit in the number 4 spot for the 24 hours you let me stay there. image I've got a few more coming.... so I'll take another run at you in a week or so.... figured I'd tell you now, so you can pick up a few more 8's and giggle while you load them on the set registry at night. It's good to be the king... isn't it?

As for Art and baseball, I'm all for it. If I can get Art to pump some of that coin over to Baseball, and you keep enjoying your vacation, maybe I can catch my breath.

or better yet, you and Art should look into Hockey too. I hear they got all kinds of low pops over there!

  • Mike,
Don't know nothin' about being the king. Just have an OK start on a nice set. I think that Art's set is actually nicer overall, I just have a couple of big point cards that are higher grade (Mostly the checklists including the pop 1 Funny Ring). Overall, his stuff is probably nicer so I defer that title to to him. Where I have a lead if anything is quantity, quantity, quantity but that is a different story.
I have already got a few cards waiting that need to be registered still so anytime your ready. Your welcome on the number four spot. Maybe we can do it again for a few days.
Several of those cards are really, really tough in high grades and I won't be talking muching without those holes being filled.

SKINS - I would look at examples of the highest priced cards from the various sets before deciding what set to jump into. There's nothing like realizing that the card you need to pay 4 figures for, as a key to the set, is one of the ugliest things you have ever seen. Also who are your favorite players, and do any of them have rookies/last cards/special cards in that particular set?
My suggestion as to the most easily completed major '60s set, as with a lot of other people, is 1968.

  • Skinsfan - I know that this is a shameless plug but here's my 66' Partial Baseball Set that could get you off to a rather handsome start on a 60's Baseball Set. Currently #15 on the registry (with scans) it would get you up and running right away. Thanks for considering it.
Best regards in whatever you choose.
