1974 Baseball Variation Help... Card 599

Hey guys,

I know that there is a variation to this card, but I'm unaware of what the difference is between the San Diego variations are. Anyone know why the San Diego's are weighted more? I'm thinking because the Washington's were printed first, but the second print run was split between the two San Diego versions.

Thanks in advance,

-Ian

I'm going by memory but I think the difference is the fact that one is printed in all caps while the other is printed using lower case. I don't recall if it was the team name or player name that varied though. I'll check tonight if nobody else confirms the variation.

I'm going on memory as well, I think that while the Washington Nat'ls were corrected really early in the spring ( I remember if you didn't get the first packs in the store after a week or so it has been corrected) #599 was missed, and had more time as Washington before it was corrected. I suspect they then corrected a run with all caps, realized it was wrong and then printed it the correct way. I don't remember seeing the all caps versions until a few years later, so I don't think they were out for very long, at least on the west coast.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

OK, I've consulted my hobby bible and confirmed our recollections are correct. The original version is the Washington variation which is obviously the most valuable. The second variation has 'SAN DIEGO' in caps and is the least valuable according to the price guide. The third version has 'San Diego' in lower case and is slightly more valuable than the all caps version.
