    Dav,

I would take the best sevens that look like eights to you and resubmit them first. Crack out
a bunch of them and see if you can turn the nice ones to eights. It might be the cheapest
and probably the easiest way to upgrade for you. I'd bet you get some eights.

    Aconte,

Good idea--I almost never do this but the dealer I submitted through has a good eye for cards so I may let him cherry pick the 7s band we will try again.

    Dav,

I might be interested in the psa 6's form 63 & 64 topps, can you let me know what you have?

    Art,

    Will send tonight--at work now.

    Ryan,

I am a collector and only sell my off-grade cards when I get an 8 or 9 to replace it.

  • 56% PSA 7 or less, with a goal of 100 sets in PSA 8? That ought to teach you to quit bad-mouthing PSA and the graders on this board.
  • DavalilloDavalillo Posts: 1,846 ✭✭
Grow up--I never suggested these grades were not fair.

Since you are so preoccupied with me reaching 100 sets(I would call it obsessed) I will let you know every time I complete one.

    Dav
  • Jim,

Thanks for posting the results, but....ouch! That must hurt considering so much was spent on grading fees alone. With all due respect Jim, to get 56% back in 7's, 6's, 5's or even less suggests that much, much closer scrutiny is needed prior to submission to screen out the bad stuff. Just curious: Did you personally select these cards for submission with the anticipation/hope of receiving 8's, or did the dealer pick them for you?

    Skycap,

Doesn't hurt at all--what hurts is submitting a beautiful t206 Green Background Cobb and have it come back trimmed. On the other hand there are cards(just 1) I bought for $5,000 that have an smr of close to $20,000 and a few others I bought at $2,000 that have an smr of $7,000 to $10,000 so its okay.

I give the cards a cursory glance before I submit them-I always hope for a lot of 8s and 9s but psa's spies must have found out who I was submitting through and they lowered the grades(of course I am kidding). I have another 500 coming back--perhaps I will do better on these--part of this is my 61 nu-card set that I am doing as a tribute to a terminally ill board member however and these are kinda rough.
Next I have a bunch of 60s Kahn's sets to submit. Just need to find holders for the cards.

Still will do these sets in 8 or better and will have to count on my friends to supply me the cards.

Davalillo - Thanks for posting the results. Always interesting to read how other collectors do on their submissions. I would be checking those 7's again to send in again for a shot at 8's.

    Nick,

Thanks for the tip. I will ask my buddy Joe Orlando for some when we speak this week.

    John,

I gave 1,000 cards to a dealer friend on January 3rd. I called him today and asked for the invoice numbers and 2 of 4 were done(250 per invoice).

Wow $20000 card for $5000. What card has SMR of $20000?
  • DavalilloDavalillo Posts: 1,846 ✭✭
    Koby,

Bought 1968 Clemente from Gary Moser in psa 9 about 6 years ago for $4,500--current smr is $18,000.

    Jim
  • kobykoby Posts: 1,699 ✭✭
Is this the same Gary Moser that is the subject of Mike Wentz's since deleted card alterers thread on the SGC forum?
  • DavalilloDavalillo Posts: 1,846 ✭✭
    Sure is.

I bought a ton of raw cards 5-7 years ago from Gary Moser and not one came back altered. Then when I switched to buying psa, I also did business with him. But I have not bought anything from Gary in 4 years.

Its hard to believe all the bad stuff I read and hear about him --I had nothing but good experiences with him.

    Jim

  • Jim

I am a little confused. The Clemente was a 68?

Davalillo (Jim) -- What's the story on the trimmed Cobb? Any details that can be shared?
  • DavalilloDavalillo Posts: 1,846 ✭✭
Happy new year--how's the new baby?

Nothing makes me happier than buying pre-war cards. I just love the 1887 Allen & Ginters in high grade.

    Dave,

Boy--try finding the Boog Powell or Curt Flood from that set. I believe the last Powell went for about $10K--Murcerfan would know.

    Dan,

All sets I submit are ones I acquired raw 1989-1997. During that time I bought a lot of cards that were raw--including a lot of high end cards--perhaps 15-20 high-end cards came back trimmed or recolored. Two prominent dealers at that time sold me most of them--to my knowledge they are both out of the bus today. I hesitate to divulge their names other than saying that apparently Marshall also had a big problem with them and threatened to sue them if they did not give him a full refund. I let it slide as it was over 5 years from when I bought it. I ended up selling the card as trimmed to a major dealer for $1,000.

Jim -- Glad to hear that these guys are no longer around.
  • Kinda tough spotting the hack jobs, huh Jim? Best left to the experienced graders (if there are any left).image
  • DavalilloDavalillo Posts: 1,846 ✭✭
Not a lot funny about PSA losing experienced graders.

I certainly was not unique in having altered cards--I have spoken to many serious collectors who were left with a lot of altered cards during that era.-
  • Joseph Gretzky is great. He's very happy and quiet. After 5 weeks he's finally letting me get back to the boards a bit image

  • Jim,

You said you give the cards a "cursory glance" before you submit them. I think that's where the problem is. I think it is crucial that we submitters carefully scrutinize all aspects of each and every card - corners, edges, centering, the reverse, print marks, sizing, surfaces, and so on. If one does not devote the proper time to thoroughly review each card, then we are only cheating ourselves and stand to waste money. This is all the more magnified when one has 500+ card submittals.

As for myself, I usually submit vintage (mostly 1950's) orders numbering 50 or fewer cards. My aim is to get PSA 8's or higher except perhaps for cards that I think will get a 7 or less but are worthwhile to grade for selling purposes). I very carefully and methodically review each card. And then I do it a second time and maybe a third. There's nothing cursory about it. I bought a few PSA cards before I ever made a submittal so I could become very familiar with their standards. My results have paid off. On a typical order where, say, the goal is to receive all 8's or higher, I usually get something like 4 9's, 33 8's and 3 7's. I've never had a disappointing order, just a disappointing card here and there.

I know that with your massive 500-card submittals it would take a lot of time to carefully review each card, but unless you devote the proper time, I think unfortunately you have a high likelihood of continuing to be disappointed, not to mention waste money.

This is meant to be a constructive contribution, not a criticism.

The last '68 3-d Flood that I am aware of surfacing, was about 2 years ago.
... and in one of Al Rosen's auction, it was quite nice........ possible psa9.
It went for about $1,200 after the penalty, as i recall anyways.
probably a real bargain in hind sight.
These cards have completley dried up again.
I still think the Stottlemyre is as scarce as Powell, and together... they are the least-est.
.......then again don't hold your breath waiting for Flood or Staub.

    Jim,
are you submitting any '63 Kahn's Football ??

  • DavalilloDavalillo Posts: 1,846 ✭✭
    Murcerfan,

    Yes--will submit whole set

    Skycap,

I am not disappointed--I am happy. My 7s are worth twice my grading fees--only where I get a 6 or less do I break even or lose money.

No doubt you are a better judge of a card's grade than me--maybe if I devoted the time--but I can't even devote the time to looking at ebay. So I send in more than I should but I am fine with this.

    Football Guys,

Glad to enter the world of mid-60s football. All I want to do is get each card in 8--used to being behind others in the registry...and I will bow before addressing Fuzz.

  • Dav,
Welcome again the land of 60's FB.
Looks like you drew the same grader on 66 that the rest of have as they always seem to come back lower than expected. I think some good results overall though. Want to remind you that I have had some sucsess as well lately resubmitting high end 8's and turning those in to 9's. More $ worth of upgrade there so don't over look that opportunity.
I think you will find that Wolfbear and Skinsfan are really the dominant players in the market and I just get lucky every now and then. My kids love the "dis- fan club" though so I have to keep my reputation up.
All 8's is a heck of a challenge in those sets. I have not made it on any yet and am not holding my breath. Good luck on the quest.
    Fuzz
Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.

    Ryan,

Only one of each and I need them. Will keep you in mind as I upgrade and they become dupes.

    Fuzz,

Thanks for the comments--I look forward to the challenge.

    Marc,

I must be blind but I just noticed the baby picture--what a cutie--you are a lucky guy.
