Vatican Gold

I'm trying to find the value or gold content of Vatican gold coins. I've seen a small, medium and large but can't find any specs on them to know their value. The reverse shows 900/1000 which I take to mean they are 90% gold. Anyone know about these?

Thanks!

From Friedberg: Papal coinage closely follows Italian issues as far as coinage standards are concerned. Each pope has a unique coat of arms. These are always shown below a tiara, and often crossed keys. For most early dated coins, the date is given as the regnal year of Pope. This takes the form of "Anno" followed by the year of reign in Roman numerals.

All coins have .900 fineness. Cn you be a little more specific? A scan perhaps, or the denomination?

Just got my "care package" from the Vatican on Friday. Among other goodies, they sent me these two gold coins, the 20 and 50 Euro issues for 2003.

  • From an neoclassical artistic standpoint I very much like Vatican coins. Nice ones.

Unfortunately, no image is available. I've seen them but can not find them in my 2004 Edition of Krause World Coins. Here's a description:

Obverse: Appears to be Pope John 23rd wearing an ornate crown and facing left. Wording around the rim starting from about 8 o'clock is "10 ANNES XXIII" THen, starting at about 1 o'clock, "PONT MAX"

Reverse: An ornate coat of arms with crossing keys. Wording from 8 o'clock to 4 o'clock is "CONCILLIUM OECUMENICUM VATICANUM II" At 7 o'clock to 5 o'clock in smaller letters is "ARGOR
    900/1000"

All three coins are of the same design but different sizes. The medium one is about the diameter of a quarter. All three appear to be gold. There is no date or denomination anywhere.

In that case, they might be medals.
