I think PCI used to put the percentages of white (or red, in the case of copper coins) on the old green labels to facilitate sight-unseen trading by those of us who ARE blind (in other words, using venues like Coin World ads or the Numismatic News classifieds). Might seem a little silly if you can see the coin in person but if you were just reading an ad, seeing something like "95% white noted on holder" might be useful information.

What is silly is the thought of somebody slabbing an MS61 1923 Peace dollar, though obviously they thought it would grade higher, and PCI's cheap enough.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

I guess 95% white sounds more descripitive than 5% toned.
I've never really stopped to think if that was stupid or what. That's the way PCI has always done it.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

That Peace Dollar looks whiter than my 100% White SAE
