What do you think of these 2 morgans?
Since Russ posted that aweful looking Kennedy the other day that turned out to be an MS66, I've become even more confused.
What do you think of this Morgan & how would you grade it:

Sorry I don't know how to make a link (i'm a coindummy & computerdummy) so you'll have to cut/paste to your browser. I'd really like to know--I'm trying to learn about grading.

Looks like photoshop has been working here.

See the difference in color between the peripheral around the edge and the fields & on the face? That's wear! The luster has been worn away thus the darker color.
It really looks like it has been worn away with a polishing cloth but maybe it's just a bad picture.
Looks like a XF-$36 to me but it may go a low AU.

The 64 Kennedy may have toning that you find objectionable. I personally have not seen the coin. It mostlikey is an end roll coin that has nice original lustre with minimal contact marks making the coin a candidate for an MS66 grade. There are other 1964 Kennedy Halfs out there that you may find more appealing. Grading has a subjective component to it that is difficult to explain...
The 1884-s Morgan is one sad looking coin. It has been cleaned to the point that if it were submitted to one of the big three TPG companies, it should either be body bagged or net graded...perhaps to a VF35.
What is the difference? The 1964 Kennedy is original and the 1884-s Morgan clearly is not. From the scan, the 84-s doesn't seem to have much going for it...There is really no eye appeal.
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
The Kennedy in Russ' thread has pretty ugly toning, but it has no wear. I know it's very difficult to see the difference from the pic Russ put up. Go back to that thread and look at the reverse of the Kennedy. It is full luster and is very nice. If it were circulated, or bore any evidence of wear, both sides would have been affected. The obverse of the JFK has toned. It was stored in such a way that the obverse was exposed and the reverse was not. While what you see on the JFK may look like wear, it is just heavy toning obscuring some of the coin's detail. If you had that coin in hand, you'd likely see cartwheel luster beneath the toning. Toned coins are very difficult to photograph.
As for the Morgan you linked, I see no toning that would obscure any detail, and the reverse shows the same wear the obverse does indicating a circulated coin. In addition, the surfaces of the Morgan look unnatural. Morgans usually have a lovely satin luster, not a hard shiny look. There's much more to say, but that'll get you started I hope.
You certainly could fool many experts with the JFK pic if there was no reverse pic.
Link to the coin that you find confusing.
