OT - What Determines Thread Width

Just something I noticed tonight while reading different threads...some members posts are wider on my screen than others. I found myself having to scroll to the right to read the end of each line of type....kind of a pain but gotta do it if I want to read it all or see more than half of a coin. image

Anyone else ever notice this? Any tech people here that can explain it?

I love the scroll wheel on my mouse, but it don't work right to left...LOL. image

Sounds like you are running a small screen resolution. Most people on the internet these days are using 1024x768 or larger with a portion still using 800x600.

If you are running 800x600, you will get more left to right scrolling in picture threads than most people (who are running 1024x768 or higher) and if you are running 640x480, you probably get left to right scrolling with most picture threads and even do to some poster's signature pictures.

Time sure flies when you don't know what you are doing...

  • stujoe...thanks for the info.

I played around some with my screen resolution and going from 800 x 600 to 1024 x 768 helped and at 1152 x 864 I was able to see completly to the right hand side of all threads.

Only problem now is I need my loope to read the type...image

.Well, I guess this explains my problem. NOW, if I only knew what he was talking about or how to fix it, I'd be in good shape....Ken

....Well, I'm back! I did some checking under help and found out how to change my screen resolution. Well, lo and behold, I am set at 1024 X 768 and I've been experiencing the same problems. Maybe screen resolution isn't the problem....Ken

I run 1024x768 and still have to right scroll to read some posts...maybe it's something to do with AOL users (which BTW I am not) posting???

  • maybe it's something to do with AOL users (which BTW I am not) posting??? ....I don't think its that either. I have the dual capacity to use either AOL or turn to Internet Explorer when AOL gets slow here, and experience the same thing with Internet Explorer....Ken

I'm set to 1152 x 864 with a 19 inch monitor. I only notice it when there's a large pic imbedded in the thread.

genetics. Don't complain, they say width is more important than length.

    For CU:

Up in the upper right of a thread, there is a little button that says 'Customize'. I will pause so you can get the loupe. image

Now, click that Customize button and on the page that opens go to 'Font Size:' and set it to something larger than what it is. Make it high enough that you can put the loupe down.

Also, if you are using IE, you can go to the View Menu and choose Text Size and make it larger.

Or you can go buy a bigger monitor. image

The real answer is pretty easy and straight forward. There is a default width of a thread post. When a person posts a picture or has some other fixed-width item in their post that extends beyond the default width of the post, the individual post's width will extend to capture all the items in the post. Hence the occassional jagged nature of threads at times.
