    PSA 9
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Without seeing the back, it could even be lower than a PSA 9. I don't notice any problems with the front, but that's way too poor of a scan to guess between a 9 and a 10.

Why even take a chance here? Even at the $40.00 minimum bid, plus crossover fees, plus shipping to PSA, you could spend more than you would for a real PSA 10 on Ebay. Not to mention, you could wind up with a 9, which would be worth maybe $10.

For what it's worth I am the seller of this card and it was originally in a PSA 10 holder. So my guess is that unless there is undue negative prejudice against the card simply because of the holder it is currently sitting in, it will cross right back to where it started.

Ron, just curious, but if it was already in a PSA 10 holder, why did you crack it out? Did you think an SGC 100 or 98 would be more desirable? And, I wouldn't be surprised if you took a lot of PSA 10's out and resubmitted them, you would certainly lose a few back to 9's, as many on this board have stated before.

  • I cracked it out because I happen to like the SGC holder and my personal collection consists entirely of SGC graded cards. I've got a few of this particular one and am just looking to divest myself of it to purchase something else.

Unlike many people on either collectors board, I happen to think that at the end of the day, both companies do a good job. I've seen mistakes made by both companies and I've bought my fair share of PSA cards since I do set registry on SGC and will buy PSA cards to cross over. In all of the crossings, I've had many cards go up a full grade and just as many go down a full grade. When I can see the card in person, for the sets I specialize in, I've become really good at buying PSA cards that go up at least 1/2 grade.

If you buy the card and not the holder then it doesn't really matter does it?
  • thanks for all the opinions. as for why i looked at the card, maddux is one of my favorite players (along w/palmeiro) and i'm always looking for great rookies of theirs. i've never bought a sgc card- mainly b/c while i think their holder's very nice, i've often found that the cards really don't look as high a grade as indicated on the holder...based on my very limited SGC searches. i've also never crossed a card over. my graded cards are psa 9s-10s and bgs 9.5s.

this happens to be one of the maddux rcs i don't have in graded form and it rarely comes up on ebay (there was a psa 10 on tonight, but i got outbid in the last 5-10 minutes).

Yes resell value, if you ever do sell the card. Like yourself for example An 96 would get you about 10.00 an 98 about 40.00 or so based on the comments.

Even without seeing the card (the scan is small), I said PSA 9 purely for the "crapshoot" factor. I think that when you cross over, many graders will look for *ANY* flaw, no matter how minute, to successfully cross a GEM MINT card. Also -- I tend to think that with a significant number of modern GEM MINT cards -- if you would submit the same card to the same grading service -- that you would not receive the same grade more than 67% of the time. With most modern cards -- except where there is clearly a print dot or centering considerations -- I think what usually differentiates a 9 from a 10 is often de minimus.

I looked at the 10 that you bid on. How can I GEM MINT be centered L/R like that? At best 65/35 wouldn't you say?

For what its worth Ron (NJDolphins) has one heck of a 1963 Fleer Baseball set sitting in SGC holders.

The last 6 Maddux 87 Fleer Updates that have sold on ebay that were PSA 10's sold between $61 and $87. The sellers buy it now is for $55. Assuming you are buying the card and not the holder it looks like you would be getting a pretty good deal.

The DSL 10 Maddux did not look like it was centered that badly. Certainly no worse than a Palmiero I just saw image

This card was crossed over from a PSA 10 slab.

  • maybe it was a psa10 2 years ago, but today it would be a 9. sgc is very lax on centering, even on gems. that card doesn't have the eye appeal to be gem mint, but it would (will?) look good in a 9 holder.
  • just looked at dsl's. it shouldn't be a 10 neither. the l/r centering on it is just as bad as the t/b on the sgc. don't even waste your money on the double digit psa's anyway. get a PERFECTLY centered 9 on ebay for about 10 bucks.

no that is still a PSA 10 today... assuming that DSL submits it! image

the old DSL debate, not sure how this thread turned that way but the funny thing here is that most people on this board have bought from DSL yet on the boards they don't think his cards are accurately graded. I have bought 1 card from him, a 61 red sox team and the card was in the right holder.
  • ctsoxfanctsoxfan Posts: 6,246 ✭✭
Yep, I am a victim of that as well. I buy at least 20-25 cards from DSL a month, but it seems like that is the only way to get the high grade offerings. And, I have been surprised at some of what passes for 10's on these cards. I have 9's I submitted myself that look nicer on many occasions. So, consider the pot stirred even more.

  • The dsl debate wasn’t my intention- I’ve bought many cards from them- and in fact, most of my psa 10s have been from them. I’ve also bought psa 10s from jt cards and psa stock and can’t tell a difference between the 10s. Of course, JT cards and psa stock are “large submitters” like DSL, so I suppose that pot could be stirred if you’re a conspiracy theorist (I’m not). I’ve also bought psa 10s from various other ebay sellers. W/the exception of 1 card (not from DSL), there’s no noticeable difference between the 10s. For the 1 card, there is a noticeable difference- it’s “loose” in the holder but otherwise looks like a 10. I’m not sure how/why it’s loose in the holder as it’s the only 10 I have that looks that way.
