Help in estimating value of 1981 Fleer Baseball Set

I have the #1 Basic 1981 Fleer Baseball Set on the PSA Registry at 100% complete with a rating of 9.30. I also have the #1 Master 1981 Fleer Baseball Set on the PSA Registry at 98%. Of course, the same cards are listed in each with the exception of the variation cards that are listed in the Master Set.

If I was to sell this set on ebay, what would you feel would be a fair starting price and where do you think it would end up?

Thanks,

Dale

Really tough to say. The newer sets are more difficult to sell complete and are probably more volatile. You would probably do better breaking it up. I'm guessing you have at least 4 grand into the set (~$3960 in grading fees alone). Getting a bid over that will be challenging. What you'll most likely get are dealers who intend to break up the set.

Good luck with it if you decide to sell.

Not sure what a "fair starting price" means. Can a starting price be fair or not fair? If you had a start price of $15,000, I don't see how that would be unfair to anyone. It also wouldn't sell.

Someone on the board has said "Sell it the way you built it". I would guess that there are more people willing to buy a card or two than people will to shell out a couple of grand for the entire set. Of course it only costs a couple of bucks to find out. Put it on ebay with a starting price you'd be happy with. If it doesn't sell, then break it up or keep it.

Just my 2 cents, since you asked.

Much better breaking up a modern set.
I've done surprisingly well and still have
plenty of cards that will sell for decent
    prices.

Had some great talks with several dealers, collectors and even Superior about this.

I would agree, break it up. I can't imagine anyone paying $4,000 dollars for that set, and that would only get you even on grading fees. PSA 10's of this set are often quite inexpensive, I just picked up the Baines RC (SMR $175) for $55 last week. But, you might make out better on the bigger stars.
