HELP! Did Puerto Rico use Spanish currency in the mid to late 1800's?

Specifically an 1879 Spanish 10 Centimos. Did Puerto Rico use such coins?
I have someone angry with one of my auctions because I put that "these coins were also used in Puerto Rico."
Help,
Glenn

On page 960 of my 3rd edition 19th century Krause under puerto Rico, a picture is shown of a countermarked Spanish 10 Centimos.

    It is marked ND- 1877-79

As a Spanish colony too small to have its own mint, before the end of the Spanish American war in 1898. it's hard to figure what else they would have used!

  • Thanks, I also found the answer from the Puerto Rico tourism board web site:
During the colonization of Puerto Rico (1493 to 1899), the money that was used in Puerto Rico, was that of Spain.

  • Yep, I've seen that bait line before but I don't think it was your auction. Something more blatant like the title 'Puerto Rican coin', I think, and it turned out it was also a Spanish 10 centimos piece. It's a true statement but misleading and may make a buyer wonder about a seller's honesty. It's the same as if I were to tell you I had a coin from Puerto Rico today and it turned out to be a common U.S. cent.
