Why won't my private messaging stay on?

Sorry for such a mundane question, but I'm still unfamiliar with many of the workings of this board. I go to my profile, turn on the private messaging, and then at the bottom press a button (I forget what it says), and after pressing a button it says that might change was successful. Then I go to my previous post and there is the tiny logo for private messaging. I wake up in the morning and it's gone -- why?

    Could it have something to do with whether you're signed on at the time. Perhaps it doesn't show up until you sign in.

    Is there any way to keep it on so that someone can PM you while you are offline and you can pick it up later. Another board I used to talk on (totally different subject matter) had a PM program whereby messages could build up, just like you answering machine and when you logged on there was an indicator that you had messages. Does this have anything like this
