New to board

Hello Everyone,

My name is Chad and I've been reading this forum for several months. I only collect PSA, SGC, and BGS cards.. Just recently I joined the PSA membership, due to-well they made me.. I have no problem with that, it's just good business! Anyway, I am currently in the process of collecting 2000 SP Authentic football. I'm three cards short of completing all the rookies graded PSA 9 and 10. This brings me to the reason for my first post. I've been reading about cross-overs, SGC vs PSA, beckett vs trimmed, and I wanted to share my latest experience with the forum.

As you know when you join, you get 6 free grading certificates. I had 4 SP's that I felt were Gem, so I sent them. Along with the four cards, I had a SGC 7.5 Elway rookie which I was getting ready to list on Ebay. I also had a BGS 8 Montana rookie, which I purchased at a card show in KC.. Like I said I felt the Elway rookie would bring $25 on Ebay, so I decided to bust it out and send along. I always felt the Montana was a better card that a 8, it had subs of 8.5,8.5,8,8.5.. I just wanted a second opinion, so I busted it out and sent it also..

OK, this is the purpose of the post. My SP's came back PSA 9, PSA 9, PSA 10, and PSA 8. I was shocked at the PSA 8. After looking over the card I noticed a nicked corner.. What??? I know it wasn't there or I'd of never sent it.. Stuff happens I'm not to worried. Now for the Elway rookie. It WAS A SGC 7.5(A throw away card!! A $25.00 Ebay card!!) To my shock and heart attack, it came back a PSA 9!!! Holly Cow!! I just hit the lottery!!! The Montana which I purchased at card show came back TRIMMED!!! I was tweaked!! What and how, why and when!

This brings me to my concern. I'll never purchase a BGS card again! Knowing the Beckett stuff seems to bring more money, knowing how the market seems to LOVE Beckett stuff, It makes my stomach turn.. Beckett Grading, the toughest graders???, encapsuled a trimmed card. Never Again!! Makes me SICK!! Now the Elway, what's up with that? Was SGC sleeping? I almost sold a PSA 9 for $25.00.. All I can figure out is the grader felt sorry for me.

The problem I have is now I want to bust all my "other" cards out for regrading. How many more BGS cards will come back trimmed?? Thanks for reading and I LOVE this forum and hoppy..

Welcome to the boards and congrats on your PSA 9 crossover.

If you want to turn all your other slabs into PSA ones, go for crossover service on them. You can always submit them with minimum grade requests so that if they don't cross, you are only out the fees. It might save you the hassle of getting something back trimmed when it was previously in a holder.

    Good luck

  • No, but I wish(just for hoppy reasons) When I was a kid, I did a family tree and nothing came up. Also, before I was married I lived in Denver. I told all the girls that Justin Speier was my brother, ha ha. You know for personal reasons..

    Thanks for all the support

  • Welcome welcome!

(BTW, since he was mentioned, Chris Speier went to my alma mater UCSB!)
  • Chad- Welcome to the boards. I'm working on that SP Authentic set too (like you didn't noticeimage). Good to see some new collectors appreciating some of the nice modern sets that are available.
It's for the reasons you mentioned that I stopped buying BGS cards. I feel that Beckett manipulated the graded card market through their Price Guides to give the impression that their cards are worth more than PSA and more so SGC. Through their manipulations ,in the modern card market, this has become a self fulfilling prophecy.
As many people say "Buy the card, not the holder".
BTW, are you doing any other SP Authentic football sets? You'll notice I've registered all the years up to 2001. I hope to make huge strides this year in all those sets. LMK if you are interested in starting these sets and if you need any advice.

  • Thank You for your support. BTW, I notice you don't have a Shaw SP. I have a PSA 9 Bobby Shaw, if you need or want it. I do have some 98,99 Sp's that I need to cross. I have a Brady and Pennington sent in to be graded as I type. I also need a Northcutt, have one?? Again, thanks and I'm glad you responded because I have noticed and respected all your SP sets..

    Welcome to the boards Chad!

I checked out your set on the registry and youve got really high end cards. Nice upgrade on the Delhomme.

When did you start collecting it in PSA form..back in 2000 or recently?

If the panthers get to the Super Bowl....it would be tough for me to hold on to that PSA 10 with all the hype around him and his team.

Football collectors get an extra special welcome!
  • I started in 2000. I also collect Bronco cards and my first SP was a Mike Anderson PSA 9. It kind of got out of hand from there. I know what your saying about the Delhomme. What kills me is while trying to get a 10 from PSA, I sold off several 8 and 9's. I knew I should've kept them longer. But how many of us can and have said that. I'm going to start something else soon, maybe a vintage or player set. Thanks for the support.. Maybe someday that SP set will be valuable.
