Uma and the Lion. When I asked my Father-in-law what he wanted for his B-Day, he chuckled and said he would love one of those or a $5 gold indian. He said the Uma and the Lion is one of the most gorgeous coins ever minted. When I asked him to tell me more he just laughed a little more and said, you have see one for yourself. For some reason I think he is setting me up here.

Are they rare, were they minted long ago or are they Proof moderns. Any info would be welcome.

Now I'm only looking on spending about $50.00 on him so that rules out the $5 Indian, and the way he laughed I'm nervous to find out about this one.

I figured he was having fun with me, that old rat.

Anyone know if there are any reproductions out there and what they usually run. Where the originals just made in gold, or where the also made in silver and copper. If so how much have they been fetching.

yup, only 1839. There are a number of varieties as well as similar pieces that are struck in different metals. These should be regarded as Patterned crowns as they do not display any mark of value and are medallic in appearance. I think I have seen recent restrikes shown here on this forum but the Brit pro's should be rising in three or four hours to give you the real lowdown. My intrests lie only in George III Crowns, and Victorian Gothic crowns.

There are a couple other replicas on eBay now too but their quality isn't the best, the one I linked to looks pretty decent.

There was a nice one in the recent Heritage auctions, I don't know if it sold or for how much but it was in the $40,000.00 + range....
