  • Terrible!

Is it that more thefts are indeed happening or just that we are hearing about more? In either case it is terrible.

  • Where (Location city and state) were the coins stolen from? It may help if some of us live in that town and see them at a local shop.

It would also be interesting to see if any of these coins are suddenly "made". A smart thief would crack them and resubmit raw.

Steve wrote me and said he tried to contact PCGS about the stolen coins. He said they would not look out for the coins being resubmitted for reholder or regrades. I don't know from where the coins were stolen.

It is truly a very sad state for numismatics when a/the major TPGC will not even consider helping to possibly recover coins of this caliber.

Don't they have a clue as to how far this would go toward customer relations? What does it take---a dedicated program to input "known as stolen" PCGS slabbed coins with ID numbers? A few minutes to see if submitted coins are on it? Of course, this is hoping they don't crack them out and submit.

Everything starts and everything stops at precisely the right time for precisely the right reason.

  • From a database perspective, maintaining a list of coins reported stolen would be
VERY EASY to assemble and maintain. I say this because PCGS already maintains
a database containing cert numbers and assigned grades. When we use the cert
numbers to add our coins to the PCGS Registry, the database already knows what
coin it is, its grade and attributes. When we add comments to the registry, they
are saved with the coin. For example, when I added my Statehood Quarters (with
owner comments of "Flag Holder") to the yearly proof sets, the comments that I
added from the Statehood Quarter Registry automatically carried over. The same
was true for my Sacagawea Dollars.

Adding two fields to the database such as "Stolen" and "Date_Stolen" wouldn't be
asking too much. Including this information could be the responsibility of the coin
owner and then if someone were to pull up the Cert Verification page with a cert
number having been reported as stolen, the results page could indicate that this
coin had been reported " Reported stolen on 'date' ".

A good database administrator and web person could accomplish this task (from a
system's perspective) in roughly 1/2 hour to 1 hour. Adding a place for owners
reporting coins stolen (encapsalated from other grading services) would be a
GREAT public relations move. Stolen coins submitted for crossovers, not cracked
out, would be much easier to discover.

I'm thinking that this could do nothing but provide extensive public relations good
for PCGS to take this project on.

I think that is a great idea Matt. I wonder what the best way to present it to PCGS would be? I understand there is a way to ask David Hall questions directly in this forum but I don't know how that is done.

  • To ask David Hall a direct question, just drop down the navigation menu to the Q & A option. Then, just fire off your question. As an aside, I think it is an excellent idea also.

  • Thank you for the kind words. image

I did go to the Q&A forum and advised them to take a look at this thread, especially my posting... (Provided a link and everything)

We shall see if anything comes of it...

This is incredible! What could possibly be the excuse for not doing so?

This question/proposal was discussed on these boards, and brought to PCGS' attention, well over a year ago. Nothing ever happened ...

If it is possible for PCGS to track stolen goods by the bar code, they should do it. Otherwise, they are not doing the best for the hobby.
  • The topic of a stolen coin registry/database has come up a few times since I've been a board member. But there dosn't seem to be enough interest in a solution. I suggested a workable, but not perfect solution a bit back:

    Old Thread with orginal idea

But received little interest. It seems that the negatives of implementing a such a system outweigh any benefits.
    Someone please prove me wrong.

Well, at least he said he would alert the graders for the coins. I think it shows he may be open to setting up a system to look for stolen coins.
