Does anyone know from German tokens?

Here's something I found in a junk bin. (Hello, my name is John. I'm a junkbinaholic.) The dealer just gave it to me.

Obviously it's a 10 Pfennig token minted in 1917. Looks to me like iron or an iron-zinc alloy. Something to do with Bonn?

Anyone round these parts speak German?

It means it's guaranteed by the city/province of Bonn.

It's some kind of Notgeld used as a form of exchange in lieu of specie.

It is indeed Notgeld, German wartime emergency money. This one is catalogued by Menzel as M-1792.2 and is made of zinc. It lists for about $3 in Unc.

    Thanks Askari!

This piece fits in very well with my interests in WWI coinage.

So if I paid nothing for it, do you think that was a good deal?

  • Cool piece! I have the 5 pfennig and others.
Also, here's a link to a dealer's page that lists a lot of different types and pricing and is a good reference for what Notgeld is out there.

At a price of 0.00, I'd say you made out like a bandit! Cool piece.
