Let's have some attribution lessons.

Using some tips I got from Tbirde56, and careful attention to the identifier information in Krause, I was able to fully identify almost 100 coins with Arabic, Cyrillic and other esoteric lettering.image

That left me with more than a dozen still unidentified.image

Here are two of them:

The first one is 25mm, dark cu-ni(?), 6.7g

The next is 28mm, almost certainly cu-ni, 9.8g, weakly stuck with high rims.

Hopefully someone can not only identify them, but give me some lessons/tips on how to go about it when the identification material in Krause turns out to be inadequate.image

I'm not sure of the second coin, but the first one is a 1931 (AH1349) 10 fils from Iraq. It's nickel with 2.4 million minted.

On the reverse, the date to the left side is 1931 in Arabic and the date on the right is the Hejira date 1349. The center says 10 and below the number it says the denomionation. I'm not sure what the rest says.

There are only 2 years for this type, 1931 and 1933.

  • Second coin is Tunisia KM#319. No mintage listed

At first glance I thought it may have been from Iraq, Iran or Saudi Arabia.

I ruled out Saudi because there was no tree with two small swords below it (Here's a link showing this symbol LINK) and ruled out Iran because there was no lion with a sword. Looking through Krause, I now noticed that there are only Iraqi coins with the frilly shaped collar (what's that called again?).

I find for many Arabic inscripted modern coins the easiest way to identify them is by checking the dating and for any symbols. And also if there is a bust on the obverse.

Some issues only have the Hejira date on them in arabic. Some with Common Era and Hejira dates on them in Arabic and yet others with the CE date in English numerals and the AH date in Arabic.
  • The shape of the coin is called 'scalloped'.
