Now thats what I call an ENTRANCE !!!

Just checking out the new listed set's and saw that there is a new #1 set for 1964 Topps Hockey. Debuting at #1 in such a difficult competitive set is an awesome feat. This is also the first of this set to have a GPA of 8 or better.

Congrats " MRTALLBOY "

P.S. I think he's Canadian EH!!!image

    WOW!!!

and just think..Theo's set (now in 2nd place) won an a registry award as best vintage hockey set!

here is the write up on it:

Theodore Kotsiakos - 1964-65 Topps - Best Vintage Hockey Set of the Year (1971 and older)
As the last member of the award winning Tall Boy club in 2003, this set rose to the top of the Vintage Hockey Set category. Of all the Topps Tall Boys, this set is arguably the most difficult to obtain in high-grade. All the big names of the era are here such as Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull and Jacques Plante and the high-number series is tough and filled with Short Prints. This particular set, while not 100% complete (at 97.27%), has a GPA that is head and shoulders above the rest at 7.89. The second best GPA with a completion above 90% is at 7.23 and that is a fairly large gap all things considered. There are currently four registrants that are seemingly within striking distance of one another, but this award winning set has a GPA that is tremendous for this issue. This set will be hard to beat.

Well....it looks like it has been beat.

Oh by the way...unless something mind blowing comes along...this set should also win Best Rookie Set of 2004 too!
  • wow! that might be even more impressive than an 8 GPA on the '54 set.....truly an accomplishment

    That is quite impressive!

  • I'd love to hear the story behind the building of this set. Was his goal to debut #1? Or did he just find out about the registry and decided to post it?

Wow, that is very impressive! That set is so tough to get in high grade. This set yields some of the nicest 6's and 7's I have ever seen. I can hardly imagine what a complete set better than 8 looks like.
  • He also added a 2nd set with a bunch of 7's in it.

Absolutely incredible set! I emailed the guy and complimented him
on his great set. I also gave him a link to this thread and invited
him to join the boards. Hopefully he'll sign up & add some more
knowledge to this forum (assuming he's not already lurking).

On a side, but hockey-related note: this sucks... I had a free
pair of tickets to tonight's Wings/Blackhawks game, and I'm unable to
go because of all this damn snow (got 8+ inches today in MI.).

  • WOW!!!

I wonder if this individual is already "lurking".It must have been really cool to pull off what he did.Truely an amazing set.

    CW,

On your side note,It was sunny and 65 degrees here in NE Florida. No snow but plenty of sand and surf image

If you will send my son some snow(he's 11),I will send you some sand. image All he wanted for Christmas this year was to see snow.Imagine how crazy that sounds.

Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.

CW- I feel your pain. Just got done snowblowing here in Livonia.

Think of it this way - the beer is cheaper and the restroom is cleaner at your house....

    Hey guys,

I got a nice reply from the collector that owns this set. He's
looking into getting a username for the boards and he may join in.
He said he was glad to see his set creating some discussion, a set
that took him 3 years to build. I'm glad he got to see that other
hockey collectors were appreciating his set.

    Vic:

Right about now I'm thinking about offering to hand-deliver that snow
if you could set me up in a spare room for a couple of weeks. PLEASE?!?!

Yep, not to mention the lines are much shorter, also. image

I doubt anything would stop me from attending a hockey game if I had tickets. I would walk in the snow for 5 miles (uphill that is). I have tickets for the Coyotes vs. Sharks game here in Phoenix on Wednesday night. I can't wait.

Easy for you to say, Steve -- you live in Phoenix! image
But seriously, by the time my friend got home from work
and we drove down there it would've been the 3rd period.
