GAI more popular than SGC?

I noticed that when I was finding a category to list my cards on ebay, that they give you a choice on graded cards. You can choose PSA, GAI, or other. I guess SGC in included with PRO and Becket in the other category?

  • Buckwheat, It doesn't make a difference. We all know SGC is a quality company with a quality product produced by quality people. GAI is just fine as well. Anyone with an eye for investment grade sportscards that takes the time to inform themselves will discover that these are top-notch outfits. Perhaps you're simply pointing out the oddity that Pro and SGC would be together in eBay listings? I would agree that is unfortunate as it doesn't reflect the enlightened consumers opinions. What's a shame for all of us is these quality companies don't enjoy the same liquid market--based on quality of product they should. We'd see some real competition for our grading dollars then.

Basically Ebay doesn't want to clutter up with too many categories that are not used much -- and I think that when the decisions were initially made, the critical mass required was 75 listings of said grading company within whatever time period to qualify. SGC is a choice for pre-war, but not 1950 - 1959, I think. But SCD is an option? Kind of weird -- but Ebay ultimately doesn't want so many categories that there are only a handful of listings in each one...

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

The figures promoted by the activists say that 10% of collectors are GAI, but more valid studies show the real numbers to be around 2%.
  • The larger dealers are throwing a bone to GAI and getting 5-10% of their cards done through them based on relationships with Rocchi and the graders. Since most of these big dealers have made their graded card living with PSA and since PSA is the standard they are going to stick with them. Personally I only buy PSA cards for older stuff, and the only cards I have graded otherwise are newer cards - last 5 years or so through BGS.

  • Vargha means gay not GAI.

    And he's right, as usual.

I had just come from reading some of the posts on the SGC board, and after reading all of the posts about PSA going down the tubes, and SGC being the major challenger to PSA, I had to poke a little fun at GAI getting a category, but not SGC.
