Thank you Stacks!!!! Ship Name Found!!!!

While looking thru some auctions on their site, I ran across some info on SA coppers. Mainly a short SA history lesson. I have needed this info some time. The name of the ship on the reverse of the SA copper 1/2d and 1d is the Dutch vessel "Dromedaris". image

  • I can't remember if you asked the name of the ship before but I see it's listed in my Schon catalog.

  • Spinaker, may be I'm wrong but it looks like that the Dutch Flute "Dromedaris" was shown only
on SA 5 shillings silver coin, while another type of vessel Frigate (and I don't know its history and name) was minted on SA coopers. I'm repeating, that may be I'm wrong, (and I'll try to check it once more) and Iwill be very glad if you can show me your source of data.
Laurent , thanks for that great link and it is cool that you have discussed that topic, guys! I always try to identify the type and the name of any ship on coins with ships , that I have in my collection!image

Edited to add: it might be also that both coins have the same ship, shown from different positions image really I don't know

  • Spinaker, if you'll look at the date, that was minted at 5 shilling silver coin Link 1652-1952 (you can see that coin in Shep's scans) and will compare that date with the link of Laurent my version will be more close to the true, may be.imageLink 2

  • Here is the info from the Stacks site for lot # 1062 which are 1923 proof coppers.

1, ;1/2 and ;1/4 Penny, 1923. First Reverse shows two songbirds recalling the Gospel question ``Are not two Sparrows sold for a Farthing?'' The two higher denominations depict Jan van Riebeeck's ship Dromedaris. Denominations appear as 1 PENNY 1, ;1/2 PENNY ;1/2, and ;1/4 PENNY ;1/4, used only in 1923 and 1924. KM 14.1, 13.1, 12.1. Deep brown with slightly ``powdery'' surfaces. Choice Brilliant Proof. 3 pieces.

The 1952 5s with the date "1652-1952" commemorates this event. I do believe the two ships to be the same.
