Silly Money? Or forget Krause!

Were bid amounts on the coins in Darkhorse's Silent Auction excessive? Or an indication that when quality Darkside is made available you can forget what Krause says?
Before anyone reaches for the flamethrower let me say Askari beat me out of the Polish 10 Zlotych (coin #6) by bettering my 2X over Krause bid of $25. A beautiful coin in a group of beautiful coins, Darkhorse! Hope you'll do this again.image

    Yes.

That and the comfort level of seeing excellent images of the items and dealing with a known forum member.

Edited to add: Bear in mind, he had a need to sell and members realized that and were glad to respond.image

But aren't we always the ones who say that Krause is not accurate when it comes to todays market?image

  • As for myself, I use krause as a guide, but not the bible. When a nice coin comes up for sale and I want it the Krause goes out the window. Just my rule of thumb.
  • I dont think price guides take eye appeal into account. I collect coins and do not invest. In other words I could care less how much over greysheet, red book, krause or charleton I bid. If I see a coin w/ a great deal of eye appeal I set a price in my head (like a bottom line).

I know I paid a great deal for 3 coins in that auction. However, I like the toning all 3 coins exhibit. Just my .02.

Bob, I think some of it may have been due to the good cause behind the auction. image On eBay, you would have beaten me for sure. image

Krause is a joke as far as prices are concerned. It's used worldwide, but never for the homeland coins. Besides that, the coins were well known to most members, the techniques of photographing them had been discussed, and Phil's skills definetely added value to his items. Like I said in a previous post that was perhaps misunderstood, great photos, is the all-powerfull tool of marketing online sales, and I'm cool with that.

  • Do we actually know the winning bids? I was looking for them to see how it went, but all I know is how much I paid for my coin.

Could I ask how much people paid for the coins? Especially lawyersgunsnmoney's wonderful coins. Those are beautiful.
Wanted: High grade Irish (Republic of Ireland, not Northern Ireland or British) coins, slabbed and unslabbed. Also looking for Proof and Uncirculated Sets

If anyone is married to Krause and wants to pay me their "quote" of $900.00 for an NGC SP67 1911 1 franc Swiss Specimen, I would be most happy. image

However, at $900, you would be "buried" for a long time.....even at $800. The "going" price is more in the range of $600-650 for this type of superb specimen, so I have no idea where $900 comes from. On the other hand they are way low on other Swiss silver; especially 19th and early 20th c........British stuff? well . . . image
  • John, I paid silly money.

LG&M - If the coins come anywhere near as beautiful as the pictures (and with Darkhorse's talents I'm convinced the coins match the photos) there is no such thing as "silly money" for those beauties! image
